HomeMy WebLinkAbout1971-222 CCR Member John Leary introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption: RESOLUTION NO. 71 -222 RESOLUTION REGARDING. PENALTY PROPOSAL FOR DRIVING WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE? OF INTOXICATING LIQUOR WHEREAS, the incidents of automobile traffic accidents and the resulting deaths, injury and property damage have reached proportions which alarm public officials and citizens; and WHEREAS, statistics indicate that a large number of such traffic accidents involve drinking drivers; and WHEREAS, Judge David Leslie of the Hennepin County Municipal Court bench has proposed significant changes in the penalties usually imposed for drivers convicted of driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor; and WHEREAS, it is recognized that the imposition of stronger penalties will result in the trial of more cases involving driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor and possible thereby tend to overburden the single court room facility at Crystal; and WHEREAS, it is recognized by this City Council that the responsibility for traffic law enforcement lies primarily with local government: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Brooklyn Center as follows: 1. The City Council endorses the concept of Judge Leslie's proposal and urges the judges of Hennepin County Municipal Court to adopt similar stricter standards of sentencing those convicted of drivin, while under the influence of intoxicating liquor. 2. The City Council, in recognition of the possible resultant need for more court room facilities as a consequence or adopting stricter sentencing standards, offers to cooperate with Hennepin County in making available some of the needed space and facilities. RESOLUTION NO. 71 -222 November 22, 1971 Da to Mayor ATTEST: Clerk The motion for the adoption of the foregoing resolution was duly seconded by member Theodore Willard and upon vote being taken thereon, the following voted in favor thereof: Philip Cohen, john Leary, Vernon Ausen, Howard Heck and Theodore Willard; and the following voted against the same; none, whereupon said resolution was declared duly passed and adopted.
