HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024.05.21 PRCMMINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION FOR THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA REGULAR SESSION MAY 21, 2024 CALL TO ORDER Chair Jeffrey called the meeting to order at 6:33 pm. ROLL CALL Chair Jeffrey, Vice Chair Bonovsky, Commissioners Sorenson and Ebert were present. Also present were Parks & Recreation Deputy Director Carissa Goebel and Public Works Planner Kory Andersen Wagner. Commissioner Younglove was excused and Commissioner Branch was not present. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Chair Jeffrey added a discussion item of Organics Recycling. Commissioner Sorenson moved to approve the agenda. Commissioner Ebert seconded the motion. The agenda was approved unanimously. APPROVAL OF MARCH MINUTES Commissioner Sorenson moved to approve the minutes. Commissioner Ebert seconded the motion. The minutes were approved unanimously. CITY COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT Councilmember Butler provided an email update and it was read by Deputy Director Goebel. PARK CAPITAL INVESTMENT PLAN UPDATE Planner Andersen Wagner presented some updates on the progress of the Park Capital Investment Plan. He discussed survey results, what park amenities rose to the top, and next steps. Next steps will be to continue to gather public input at in-person events and present an update to City Council on July 22. COMMUNITY CENTER PROJECT UPDATE Deputy Director Goebel gave an update regarding the hiring of consultants Perkins & Will for pre-design work and that the microsite for the local option sales tax education will be live in early June. ADOPT-A-PARK PROGRAM RE-LAUNCH Deputy Director Goebel showed the updated website for adopt-a-park and new process for adopting a park and picking up supplies. Commissioner Sorenson requested a list of currently adopted parks be available on the website. SUMMER PROGRAM/EVENT PREVIEW Deputy Director Goebel showcased the upcoming summer programs and events for the department. ORGANICS RECYCLING IN THE PARKS Deputy Director Goebel read an email from Public Works Director Heyman regarding the next steps in organics for the city. After the Hennepin County Recycling Group (HRG) convenes the board meeting to discuss proposals the commission would like an update. Commissioner Sorenson moved to adjourn the meeting. Commissioner Ebert seconded. The decision was unanimous. FUTURE MEETING A park tour will be on June 11th, 2024 at 6:30pm and the group will meet at the Community Center to tour Northport, Grandview and Evergreen Parks. The next meeting will be August 20th at 6:30pm at the Community Center.
