APPROVAL OF MINUTES OCTOBER 21. 1993 Committee member Mills pointed out that she was not present at the October 21, 1993 meeting as the minutes indicated, and that the minutes should be amended accordingly. There was a motion by Committee Member Hastings and seconded by Committee Member Rossi to approve the minutes of the October 21, 1993 meeting, as amended. The motion passed. UPDATE ON LANDSCAPE PROGRAM The Community Development Specialist explained he had been in contact with Mr. Ted Harris, the staff person at the Technical College coordinating the landscape program. He explained Mr. Harris had indicated that no work on the project would begin until the winter quarter started, which was the first week in December. Committee members discussed the project and it was agreed that the Community Development Specialist would prepare a letter that would be sent to all persons who had applied for the program, informing them of the status of the project. The Community Development Specialist stated he would coordinate the mailing of this letter with the Technical College staff working on the project. EARLE BROWN NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSING ADVISORY COMMITTEE NEWSLETTER The Community Development Specialist explained that he had originally intended to have the newsletter articles as handouts at the meeting, but that he had not had time to prepare any of the 12 -1 -93 articles for this evening's meeting. Committee members discussed possible topics for the next newsletter, and Committee Member Mills pointed out that the Star Tribune, as part of its roundtable series, has addressed many issues with regard to neighborhoods including neighborhood revitalization, which is the next topic for January. She pointed out this could be a possible topic for inclusion in the newsletter. Committee Member Hastings suggested that an article on the Crime Watch program be included hi the next newsletter, as it was important to keep reminding people of the availability of this program. The Community Development Specialist explained that he would suggest that the next newsletter not be sent out until sometime after the holidays due to the volume of mail and other activities that people are involved in over the holiday period. REMODELING FAIR FOR THE CITIES OF BROOKLYN CENTER, CRYSTAL, NEW HOPE AND ROBBINSDALE The Community Development Specialist explained the cities of New Hope and Crysstal have invited the cities of Brooklyn Center and Robbinsdale to participate in a Northwest Suburban Remodeling Fair. Last year the cities of New Hope and Crystal held a remodeling fair which was quite successful. He explained the purpose of the fair is to encourage homeowners to make improvements in their homes. Last year's fair in New Hope and Crystal proved to be a good opportunity for members of the home improvement industry to demonstrate the benefits of their products and services. The fair will include over 50 exhibits from local contracting businesses, lending institutions, local manufacturers and municipal inspections. Workshops and demonstrations will also be organized. Prizes will be awarded throughout the day and refreshments will be sold. The fair will be free to the public. The fair will be held on March 19, 1994 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Crystal Community Center, 4800 Douglas Drive North. The Community Development Specialist explained the cost of putting on the fair is to be obtained from fees charged to the exhibitors for their booths. Also, he pointed out, all municipalities participating in the fair will be entitled to two display booths for their use. He suggested that their be at least one overall City booth and that the Earle Brown Neighborhood group could be part of that booth. Committee Member Hastings suggested that the committee could do some type of survey at the fair with regard to what people want in their neighborhoods. Chairperson Brandvold suggested that the committee could do another survey in a future newsletter, as was done in one of the first few newsletters produced by the committee. Committee Member Torres suggested that Gopher State One Call be contacted to see if they would like a display at the fair, as he felt it was extremely important for people to be aware of the hazards of digging over power lines and other utility lines. 12 -1 -93 -2 The Community Development Specialist stated that he would update the committee on the Remodeling Fair at the next committee meeting. OTHER BUSINESS The Community Development Specialist explained that the Housing Commission had recently discussed prioritizing a list of work projects for the next year. He explained they had reviewed minutes for the last couple of years and assembled a list of items they had been discussing to try to establish a list of priorities for the upcoming year. He suggested that this might be a good exercise for the Earle Brown Committee to go through. He also suggested that at some time in the future there be a joint meeting held between the Earle Brown Committee and the Housing Commission. Committee members agreed that establishing a list of priorities for the upcoming year would be helpful and that this item would be placed on the agenda for the next meeting. Also, committee members requested that the list of items from the Housing Commission's discussion be sent to the Earle Brown Neighborhood Committee members. ADJOURNMENT There was a motion by Committee Member Mills and seconded by Committee Member Hastings to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed. The Earle Brown Neighborhood Housing Advisory Committee adjourned at 8:00 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Tom Bublitz Recording Secretary
