FINANCE COMMITTEE REPORT AND THOUGHTS
JANUARY 1997
John Jackson, Cathy Ballet and Karen Youngberg have had 2 meetings with a lot of
good ideas on how to raise funds for DTC. But we feel that we really need a clearer
picture of our goals.
If we are mainly an umbrella organization, do we need much money? Shouldn't
the organizations that are working with us fund us? What are they getting for their
money?
If we are going to go to the businesses and ask for funds why should they give to
us? Because we are organizing organizations ?? Why should citizens give to us or
the city if we can not demonstrate a positive goal?
I sat down and tried to think of our fund raising as a business person, and asked
myself some of these questions. Would I give my business funds to our
organization as our goals are now? I am not sure I would - if I were a business that
didn't know much about our goals and ideas. Many of the business people already
give to organizations that would come under our "umbrella ". Why should they give
more to us?
For the businesses that don't care about helping any organization that doesn't
benefit them - WHAT DO WE DO DIFFERENT from the Chamber, Rotary,
professional business group?
My feeling - we really need to get back to a goal of promoting Brooklyn Center (at
least in Brooklyn Center) along with the goal of helping other organizations work
together. We also need a very concrete business plan.
I would like to see the finance committee come up with a plan that fits in with the
goals of the Board, but those goals really need to be defined better.
We need an answer to the "Why should we give to DTC? What are they doing for
us or Brooklyn Center ?"
