Atay 2C 194C Minutes
The regular meeting of the Discover The Center Steering Committee was called to order by Vice
Chairperson Rod Snyder at 8:55 in Conference Room B of City Hall.
Members present: Rod Snyder, Bernie Gaffney, Jim Soderberg, Pat Laniel, Mary Welch, &
Karen Youngberg. Members absent Chair Bob Peppe & Raquel Hird.
Motion made by Pat and seconded by Mary to table any financial report
until Nancy arrives. Motion carried.
Motion made by Pat and seconded by Bernie to accept minutes as written
(from the April 19th and the May 6th meetings). Motion carried.
Discussion followed on the Articles of Incorporation and the Bylaws. We need to get word back
from the attorneys on these items before we can move ahead.
• Mike McCauley, City Manager, entered the meeting at 9:05 AM. He will see that the copy of
the redone bylaws gets sent to the attorneys and will see what the status of the Articles of
Incorporation is.
Rod asked Mike what he saw as the role of a city representative on the Steering Committee.
Mike feels that an appropriate liaison person might vary as projects and programs are gotten
under way. Karen thought that we do need a specific contact person for our group. Could
Nancy Gohman function in this area? Discussion followed on the amount of participation that
the City should play. (Note - If we should desire funds from the City, we need to have that
request in around July 1 st. )
Mike then reported on some of the projects that the City is doing to improve the commercial and
residential areas. There are efforts underway to get a grocery store here hopefully on the
Builders Square site. In addition to scattered site acquisition, the City is looking at buying on a
volunteer basis homes on 53rd Ave from 4th Street to Bryant. The Brookdale Ponding project
will be a top priority item this year. Improvements on Brooklyn Blvd will be postponed due to
financial constraints. The Code Officer will be working to bring housing code violations down
this summer. The Committee felt that we do need a report from Mike on issues like this so we
can speak responsibly to issues and questions as they arise. We need to decide on how often we
can schedule Mike for our meetings. This was a very informative and productive for us.

• The Committee asked Mike what an appropriate tie between the City and The Steering
Committee should be. Also is there room any where at City Hall for storing our supplies or
should we be trying to find another area. Mike left the meeting at 10:20.
Bylaws and Articles of Incorporation will be discussed at the next meeting, if we have a report
from the attorneys.
The Committee discussed the need for a business and financial plan. The consensus is we must
have one if we are going to be out fundraising for Discover The Center.
Raquel cannot make a Monday morning meeting. Karen cannot make Tuesday mornings. We
will meet the I st and 3rd Wednesday mornings in June at 8:30 to see if this day is better.
Mary reported that the only day that is available for the Friendship Games is Aug. 18th.
Brooklyn Park is hosting them this year and that is their only day.
Mary will try to check out the cost of envelopes and letterhead before our next meeting.
Motion made by Karen and seconded by Bernie to adjourn at 10:50 AM.
Our next meeting will be Wed. June 5th - City Hall - room to be announced
later.
Submitted by Karen Youngberg, acting secretary.
