CONFERENCE ROOM B
CALL TO ORDER
The Discover the Center Steering Committee was called to order at 8:50 a.m.
ROLL CALL
Members present: Committee Chair Bob Peppe, Committee Members Jim Soderberg, Bernie
Gaffney, Rod Snyder, Mary Welch, and Karen Youngberg.
Committee Members absent: Assistant City Manager/Personnel Coordinator Nancy Gohman, Pat
Lanio, and Raquel Hird.
BYLAWS
There was a discussion regarding draft bylaws that were completed by Bernie Gaffney and Rod
Snyder. Copies of the bylaws were passed out and reviewed and discussed and will also be
discussed at the April meeting. There was a general discussion on membership of the committee and
role and selection of committee members. Mary Welch will find out the cost of being nonprofit.
FINANCES
• The committee discussed two bills.
There was a motion by Mary Welch and seconded by Karen Youngberg to authorize payment
of the bill in the amount of $25.79 to Jeanette Arnevik for food purchased on February 17,
1996. The motion carried.
There was a motion by Rod Snyder and seconded by Jim Soderberg to approve payment to
Community Education for facility use, building supervisor on February 17, 1996. The motion
carried.
FRIENDSHIP GAMES
There was a discussion that they have not been able to contact Deb Dahl from Brooklyn Park to
coordinate the friendship games and our committee members will continue to initiate contacts.
FUN RUN
Copies of the minutes were attached and the committee would like to ensure that Discover the Center
is promoted throughout Earle Brown Days.
COMMUNICATION TASK FORCE
No report, they have not had a meeting, they plan to meet in February. Karen Youngberg gave
Bernie Gaffney a sample of district 286 stationery with a logo on it. Bernie Gaffney reported that
• he attended a meeting for communications person at the Star and Tribune and attendees of the

meeting asked why the editorial staff reports tend to be so negative.
EBHCPARADE
Mary Welch questioned if Discover the Center is going to have a float in the parade.
ACTION COMMITTEE MEMBERS
The schedule is as follows: April 10 to meet with the Neighborhood Watch Groups, April 25 Rally -
Rally Night.
There was a motion by Rod Snyder and seconded by Bernie Gaffney that Discover the Center
pull in persons who are designated as coordinators from Rally Nights to help set up the April -
10th meeting. This along with Dave Grass, police department, would
3 - recognize what watch leaders have done
2- give input on what the broader vision is (broader neighborhood groups)
1- get their input.
The motion carried.
It was the consensus to discuss and meet on Friday April 5 at 8:30 a.m. to discuss the agenda for
April 10th meeting. The meeting will take place at the convention visitor's office. There was a
discussion about the SCOPE program April 27 and 28. There was a discussion about the April 25
Rally Night, Press Releases need to go out. •
There was a motion by Bernie Gaffney and seconded by Karen Youngberg to hold the Rally
Night on April 25. The motion carried. (Rod Snyder was absent during the vote).
Karen Youngberg stated she will write a letter to the editor and also talk about writing additional
press releases regarding this matter. Bernie Gaffney stated he would talk to Lauri Winters Sun -Post
about PR, Rod Snyder will write a letter inviting persons who attended the last Rally Nights.
There was a motion by Mary Welch and seconded by Bernie Gaffney to approve the PR with
Rod Snyder using his discretion in writing the letter inviting past Rally participants to the
event.
SIGNS
There was a discussion on the signs. Bob Peppe stated he will loan the rebar for the signs. The
committee would like to see marquees at Brooklyn Center High School. Bernie Gaffney will talk
to: the City and Karen Youngberg will talk to Brooklyn Center High School.
There was a motion by Mary Welch and seconded by Rod Snyder to spend up to $200 on
updated lawn signs. The motion carried.

OTHER BUSINESS
• SCOPE - April 27 and 28. What do we want the people to discover. Historical society is involved
with films on Sunday. There was an idea maybe to try and do something on Saturday such as a
medallion hunt or a coloring contest. Also presenting information from different groups. It was the
consensus of the committee to think about what other kinds of donations or items that w
o e could sell
for cost for this event. Mary Welch stated she will talk to Sears about donatin g a picnic table. The
group decided it needed 17 prizes if we were to do a drawing ve hour plus the final major prize.

INVENTORY SUPPLIES
Karen Youngberg brought up a question about supplies and requested that an inventory of supplies
be completed. Karen Youngberg stated she will keep track of the inventory including plates and
cups, etc.
ADJOURNMENT
There was a motion by Jim Soderberg and seconded by Bernie Gaffney to adjourn at 10:45
a.m.
