Swanson, Bob Peppe, Bernie
Gafney, Jim Soderberg,Karen
Youngberg, Ron Warren, MaryKay
Milla, Deb Dahl, Jan Ficken,
Jamie Cassidy, Steve Gutenchyn
After discussion, it was decided the key focus of these games /event
is to involve the people of the 2 communities and our promotional
emphasis will be on local coverage; however, Mary Kay will continue
to contact the local networks and radio stations. Terri will
contact cable TV, and Mary will work with the Sun -Post to get human
interest stories and flyers in the paper. Mary Kay stressed that
we use key messages when talking to the media such as:
collaborative effort, cooperation, FUN, and building a sense of
pride.
Ron Warren of BC and Bryan Kampa of BP will be the team captains
and all agreed to allow them to meet with the umpire and work out
the specifics of the game rules. The teams will wear the campaign
T- shirts for uniforms. It was thought 5 innings would fill up an
hour. Terri will try to get the sports people from cable TV to do
the umpiring and announcing. G
Brooklyn Park reps agreed to organize a combined childrens chorus
to sing the national anthmem. Mary will contact Coldwell Banker to
see if they will donate flags for the children to hold. Terri will lUZ
make sure the city /parks have a sound system we can use.
Roving characters such as McGruff & McTator, as well as other
entertainers, will work the stands to build enthusiasm. It was
determined that Brooklyn Center needs a mascot like the Bklyn Park
"tator" in order to identify and play on the rivalry. Karen will
check with the high school cheerleaders from both Park Center and
BCHS to see if they will participate. Bernie will get a tape of
Harry Carey's "Take me out to the ballgame" for the 3rd inning
stretch.
Discussion of the trophy resulted in the following ideas /decisions:
* It will be a roving trophy titled FRIENDSHIP GAMES.
* A bridge will be used for the visual, signifying the
connection of the communities.
* No logos will be engraved, just room on the trophy to put
the year and the winners name (possibly in the future
the games will involve more than just these 2 cities).
Deb said she would check with Viking Trophy regarding the trophy
and possibly a simple medallion to be given away as a keepsake.
Terri will solicite ideas from the cable TV staff about a fun
presentation of the "challenge" at the start of the game involving
6301 Shingle Creek Parkway
Brooklyn Center, MN 55430
(612) 569,3440
the mayors.
Several minor changes were made to the flyer which included 1)
eliminating the words city staff and steering committee, 2)
changing races to games, 3 ) adding rain or shine, and 4 ) adding
National Anthem sung by combined childrens chorus. Mary will get
an extra several thousand flyers printed to be distributed through
the park and rec ro rams of both cities. Mar will also ask the
P g Y
BC park and rec to make a few posters from the flyer. A commitment
from the Sun -Post to distribute the flyers the Wed. prior to the
event, at no cost, has already been made. Mary will also contact
Greenwood Graphics to see if he will again donate printing of the
flyers. Cost of the paper is about $100 per 10,000.
All agreed to keep the solicitation of prizes and treats from area
businesses to a bare minimum. Deb .ill contact Koops Super Valu
and Mary will contact Jerry's New Market & CUB to get lemonade and
watermelon and bulk penny candy. All agreed to allow the Bkyn
Center park & rec to have their concession stand on site at the
event.
. Terri will'ask the BC park & rec staff to help organize and staff
the various games during the event. Frisbees, hula hoops, water
balloons, parachute w /balls, possibly 3 legged races, plus any
other simple games to entertain children and adults will be
considered. •
Terri will make sure the appropriate city personnel are notified in
case of emergencies and she will work on setting up a First Aid
Booth.
Mary Kay stated that if anything negative happens, she should be
contacted so that she can diffuse the situation with the media.
Brooklyn Center reps accepted the responsibility to be the "hosts"
for this event and will meet at the Central Park site to arrange
-the physical logistics of all the activities.
THIS MEETING WILL BE ON TUESDAY, JULY 2:5 @ 5:OOpm AT THE CONCERT
