HomeMy WebLinkAbout1988 05-11 HRRMMINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS AND RESOURCES COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA REGULAR SESSION MAY 11, 1988 CITY HALL I CALL TO ORDER The Brooklyn Center human rights and resources commission met in regular session and was called to order by Commissioner Stoderl at 7:35 p.m. ROLL CALL Commissioners Stoderl, Eckman, McCumber, Sullivan, and Larsen. Also present were Councilmember Lhotka and Recording Secretary Geralyn Barone. Chairperson Kuhar and Commissioner Seburg were absent from the meeting. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - MARCH 9.. 1988 There was a motion by Commissioner Eckman and seconded by Commissioner Sullivan to approve the minutes of the March 9, 1988, meeting as submitted. The motionl,,passed. ACCEPTANCE BY CITY COUNCIL OF COMMISSION RECOMMENDATIONS OF, SINGLE PARENT FAMILY ISSUE The recording secretary explained the !city council's action of March 14, 1988, when the council directed the human rights and resources commission to further investigate the feasibility of improving transportation in the city. Councilmember Lhotka noted that at the City's planning session, transportation was a talked about item. He proceeded to explain the planning process the City has been using. Members of the' commission requested to receive a copy of the report generated by the planning session. TRANSPORTATION Commissioner Stoderl suggested the commission set some goals and objectives of how to proceed on the transportation project. The commission identified the following goals and set priorities, with one being the highest priority and five being the lowest priority: 1. Determine target groups and prepare a needs assessment. 2. Assess Brooklyn Center's current transportation system. 3. Compare and contrast other transportation systems in existence in other cities throughout the country. 4. Determine destination of proposed city system (intra/inter) . 5. Investigate financial/legal/administrative feasibility of a program in Brooklyn Center. Commissioner Stoderl suggested by December 1988 the commission should have gathered enough information to make a decision on the . 5-11-88 -1- I top three priorities. There was further discussion on how the commission should proceed from here. It was decided that the commission would not meet during the summer months and would reconvene in September 1988. At that time, there will be discussion on the top three priority items. Commissioners Eckman and McCumber will study and gather information on priority number one, Commissioners Sullivan and Larsen will study priority number two, and Commissioner Stoderl will study priority number three. The recording secretary will collect information over the summer months and distribute it to the appropriate people prior to the September meeting. Commissioner Stoderl said she would like to be able to present a report to the city council by next year. OTHER BUSINESS The recording secretary noted there will be a meeting on transportation on May 24, 1988, at Brookview Community Center in Golden Valley. She will send more information to the commissioners, and they can decide if they are interested in attending. Commissioner Larsen reported on a seminar she attended entitled "Families: Kith, Kin, and Community." Once she receives a formal recap of the seminar, she will ensure that all members of the commission receive a copy of it. • The human rights and resources commission will not convene over the summer months. The next regularly scheduled meeting of the commission is set for Wednesday, September 14, 1988, at 7:30 p.m. ADJOURNMENT There was a motion by Commissioner McCumber and seconded by commissioner Larsen to adjourn the meeting.
