HomeMy WebLinkAbout1987 04-08 HRRMMINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION 9 OF THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA REGULAR SESSION APRIL 8, 1987 CITY HALL CALL TO ORDER The Brooklyn Center Human Rights Commission met in regular session and was called to order by Commissioner Stoderl at 7:43 p.m. ROLL CALL Commissioners Stoderl, Sullivan, Wallerstedt, Eckman, and Slupske. Also present was Recording Secretary Geralyn Barone. Commissioners Kuhar and McCumber were excused from this evening's meeting, and Commissioner Seburg was absent from the meeting. Councilmember Lhotka was not in attendance at the meeting. SINGLE PARENT FAMILIES The Commissioners reported on the results of their surveys'in their specific issue areas. Commissioner Stoderl reported on teen pregnancy, Commissioner Sullivan reviewed his information on day care, Commissioner Wallerstedt reviewed transportation, Commissioner Slupske reported for Commissioner McCumber on food, and Commissioner Eckman reviewed her information on housing. It was agreed that the information on food and clothing be combined. There was some discussion on how to proceed from here. The Recording Secretary will prepare a draft report and have it prepared for the next Commission meeting. The report will include an introduction referencing the Year 2000 Report, definition of the issue areas, and general information from the surveys. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - FEBRUARY 11. 1987 There was a motion by Commissioner Stoderl and seconded by Commissioner Eckman to approve the minutes of the February 11, 1987 Human Rights Commission meeting. The motion passed. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - MARCH 18, 1987 There was a motion by Commissioner Stoderl and seconded by Commissioner Sullivan to approve the minutes of the March 18, 1987 Human Rights Commission meeting. The motion passed. REVIEW OF COMMISSION'S ENABLING RESOLUTION AND BYLAWS The Recording Secretary reviewed the request from the' City Council to review these documents. Commissioner Stoderl' said there has been a suggestion in the past to change the name of the Commission, but no action has been taken. There was a motion by Commissioner Slupske to recommend a name change from the Human Rights commission to the Human services commission. There was 0 4-8-87 -1- discussion of this proposed name change. Commissioner Slupske revised his motion to recommend a name change to something more closely defining what the Commission does. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Wallerstedt. Commissioner Stoderl suggested the vote on this motion be tabled to the next meeting. Commissioner Sullivan asked how many members there are on the other City Council advisory commissions, and the Recording Secretary reviewed the membership numbers on these commissions. Commissioner Stoderl recommended the Human Rights Commission be composed of six members plus a chairperson, and requested that this item be discussed further at the next meeting, which is scheduled for May 13, 1987. ADJOURNMENT There was a motion by commissioner Sullivan and seconded by Commissioner Slupske to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed.
