Also present was Recording Secretary Geralyn Barone. Commissioners Kuhar, McCumber, and Wallerstedt were excused from this evening's meeting, and Commissioner Slupske and Councilmember Lhotka were absent from the meeting. ANNOUNCEMENTS The Recording Secretary distributed a newsletter entitled "Blurbs from the Burbs" prepared by the Northwest Hennepin Human Services Council. She also announced a planning session for City staff, elected officials, and advisory commissioners scheduled for May 2, 1987 at the Social Hall in the Community Center. The purpose of the planning session is to review trends and issues outlined in the Year 2000 Report and the City's Comprehensive Plan. All advisory commissioners are invited to attend. REVIEW OF COMMISSION'S ENABLING RESOLUTION AND BYLAWS The Recording Secretary reviewed the changes to the current resolution and requested input from the Human Rights Commission on the resolution and bylaws. Commissioner Stoderl said in the past the Commission had talked about changing their name from the Human Rights Commission to the Human Services Commission, but the idea was not approved at that time. The Commission has also talked about decreasing the membership of the Commission because of problems with attaining a quorum at meetings. This item was tabled for further discussion at the April Human Rights Commission meeting. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORT - SINGLE PARENT FAMILIES Commissioner Stoderl suggested that the Commission meet as a group next month to have each person present their data on the issue. Then a report can be prepared for the Council who can give further direction to the Commission at that time. There was some discussion by the Commission on how to proceed in this matter, and it was agreed that an outline will be developed for each of the factors related to single parent families. This will include defining the problem and citing related statistics on incidence of the problem; what is already being provided in the 3-18-87 -1- community; the city's relationship to the problem and what, if anything, is being done by the City; implications if nothing is done; and possible solutions, noting those which the City might be able to handle. The Recording Secretary will prepare a form for the commissioners to complete on each of the subject areas. The form will be mailed out in time for the Commissioners to complete by the April Commission meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for April 8, 1987 at 7:30 p.m. ADJOURNMENT The Brooklyn Center Human Rights Commission adjourned at 8:55 p.m. Chairman 3-18-87 -2- • •
