HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997 09-10 HRRM0 ORRF.C'TIONs MINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS AND RESOURCES COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA REGULAR SESSION SEPTEMBER 10, 1997 CONFERENCE ROOM B CITY HALL CALL TO ORDER The Brooklyn Center Human Rights and Resources Commission was called to order at 7 P.M. ROLL CALL Members present: Chair Lerbs, Commissioners Braziel, Doucette, Huemoeller, Maddox, Taylor, and Yang. Also present were Council Liaison Carmody and Staff Liaison Chambers. Chairman Lerbs reminded members that they need to be present by 7:10 p.m. for meetings. Meetings will be adjourned without a quorum at 7:10 p.m. Minutes of March 12, 1997, April 9, 1997, May 14, 1997, June 11, 1997, were approved. July 9, 1997, minutes need to be changed to reflect that Commissioner Braziel was present for the meeting. Council Liaison Carmody will check with Commissioner Achtelik to verify resignation from the Commission. It is already stated in the minutes of July 9, 1997, that the Commission accepted her resignation. Council Liaison Carmody will also check with Commissioner Raisch regarding her continued membership in the group. There was a brief discussion regarding the sending of a condolence card to Commissioner Raisch regarding the death of her husband. Discussion of the League of Minnesota Human Rights Commissions - 26th Annual Conference - in Eden Prairie on September 27, 1997. Council Liaison Carmody, Commissioners Maddox and Huemoeller would like to attend. Commissioners Maddox and Huemoeller will call Assistant City Manager/Human Resources Director Chambers to verify attendance and she will send in registration with check from the City. Council Liaison Carmody told the group that the City staff is working to fill out the hate/bias plan since there was no quorum to meet in July. Staff indicated that work is going forward. 0 _1 9/10/97 Council Liaison Carmody asked the group what work items is next. She suggested that the s Commission might want to work on the youth assets program that is being promoted by the school districts. Commissioner Lerbs asked staff to provide information regarding the list of assets for the next meeting, so that the group could discuss which of them they could pursue. Another idea suggested was ways to assist in recognition of the various ethnic groups in Brooklyn Center. Concern for people feeling part of the community was expressed, as well as the need to help long-time residents learn to accept the new members of the community from diverse backgrounds. The problems associated with youth hanging out in neighborhoods at the Brookdale Mall was discussed, how this was seen by seniors as threatening. The group discussed developing a traveling diversity display that could be at City Hall, at the Library, at the Community Center, at Senior retirement homes, at the high school, and other prominent places. Staff was asked to find out about the possibilities for display cases at some locations. It was agreed that members would bring cultural materials suitable for display to the next meeting to begin discussing the display. Council Liaison Carmody made an announcement regarding the Random Acts of Kindness effort on the part of the City Council, to be displayed at Brookdale during Cities Week, October 5-11, and to be noted by the City Council at its meeting of October 14, 1997.
