HomeMy WebLinkAbout1975 09-10 HRRMr LJ-.D!,_11G3 OF TEE HUMAN RIGHT'S COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF BROOKLrN CENTER IN THE COU,`3TY OF HENNEPIiti AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA REGULAR SESSION SEPTEMBER 10, 1975 CITE' HALL Call to Order The Brooklyn Center Human Rights Commission met. in regular session and was called to order by Chairman Da=iris at 7:40 p.m. Roll Call Chairman Davis, Commissioner Sugimura, Keyrauch, Blomberg, Campion and Miller. Also present were Councilman. Robert Jensen and Administrative Assistant Ron Warren. Approval of Minutes 7®16-75 *Orrespondence It was noted by the Chairman that Commissioners Tolve and Martinsen would be unable to attend this evening's meeting and had been excused. Motion by CommisPiOner Weyrauch and seconded by Commissioner Sugimura to approve the minutes of the July 16, 1975 meeting. The motion passed unanimously. Chairman Davis noted the correspondence he had received since the last Commission meeting. He stated that two items were of particular interest. One was a letter from the Northwest Communities Group extending an invitation to participate in the Northwest Communities Futu.ring '75 Workshop to be held at the Brooklyn Center Civ c Center on Thursday and Friday, October 23rd and 24th He explained that the purpose of this workshop is to get people working together on Northwest Community projects to enhance the quality of life. Chairman Davis requested Commissioner Sugimura to farther check into this workshop to see if it would be worthwhile to attend. The second item of interest was a letter the Chairman had received from Ms. Leah La Bar. He stated that Ms. LaBar is confined to a wheelchair but gives talks to and conducts workshops for interested groups relating to handicapped persons. Chairman Davis passed out a brochure entitled "Learning tO Be Human for others and ourselves" that was enclosed with the letter and noted that Ms. LaBar might be a good resou rse person for various groups looking for speakers. Chairman Davis presented the rough dratt copy of the accessibility booklet for the Commission's review. He noted that Coro;missioner Blomberg had contacted General Mills and had obtained from them their guarantee that they would print the booklet at no cast; to the City. The Commission next reviewed a copy of an intro- ductory statement, for the accessibility booklet prepared by Commissioner Campion. it was the consensus of the Commission that the introductory statement was well done and should be incorporated in the booklet. Chairman Davis next reviewed an addendum prepared by Commissioner Tolve, containing a list of agencies or resources serving the handicapped and the elderly. It was the consensus of the Commis- sion to include this addendum in the booklet. Following the review of the addendum, Commissioner Campion distributed a number of pictures he had taken for the booklet. After reviewing the pictures, the Commission decided that Commissioner Campion should decide which pictures should be used in the booklet. Chairman Davis noted that the booklet does not have a title. He suggested that Commissioners suggest titles prior to the next meeting. Commissioner Sugimura, noted that Commissioner Campion had spent his own money for film and developing costs for the pictures to be used for the booklet, She stated that she felt he should be reimbursed. Following a discussion on this subject, there was a motion by Commissioner Sugimura and seconded by Commissioner Weyrauch to request that the City reimburse Commissioner Campion for the costs of p.ct.ures taken for the accessibility booklet.
