HomeMy WebLinkAbout1974 11-27 HRRMMinutes of the Proceedings of the Human Rights Commission of the City of Brooklyn Center in the County of Hennepin and the State of Minnesota REGULAR SESSION NOVEMBER 27, 1974 CITY HALL Call to Order The Brooklyn Center Human Rights commission met in regular session and was called to order by Chairman Davis at 7036 p.m. Roll Call Chairman Davis, Commissioners Tolve, Sugimura and Weyrauchm Also present were city Council- man Robert Jensen, Mr. Erwin Bromberg, Mr. Stephen Wrbanich, Mr. Jerome Campion and Administrative Assistant Daniel Hartman. Approval of Minutes Motion by Commissioner Sugimura and seconded 10-24-74 by Commissioner Tolve to approve the minutes of the October 24, 1974 meeting as submitted, The motion passed unanimously. Booklet for the The secretary distributed information he had Handicapped and developed for the booklet on the handicapped Senior Citizens and senior citizens. He provided a categorical listing for public buildings in Brooklyn Center, a copy of the survey amended for the Human Rights Commission and a copy of the State Law regulating acce,ssability by the handicapped in public buildings. Commissioner Martinsen arrived at 7g54 p.m. Commissioner Tolve then discussed the contacts she has made with community groups for help with the survey. She commented that the Chamber of Commerce should be contacted to obtain support from the businesses in the community. It was the consensus of the Commission that once the survey is finalized by the Commission it should be presented to the City Council for their approval. The discussion continued relative to the booklet, the categorical listing and the proposed survey format. It was noted that a detailed training program must be developed before the survey can be conducted. Mr. Wrbanich noted that Mr. Bill Hopkins of the Minnesota Society for Crippled Children and Adults has an up to to copy of the state regulations dealing with accessibility in public buildings. The secretary commented that he would contact Mr. Hopkins and obtain copies for the commission. Chairman Davis next discussed correspondence he Correspondence has received for the Commission. He stated that he has received a copy of the 1973 annual report of the State Human Rights Department. He also commented on the open house held at the Outreach Community Center. He then reported on the "I'm OK°' Program which "I'm OK" Progra~ was presented to the City Council at their November 4, 1974 meeting. He stated that the City Council endorsed the program and it has been made available to the senior citizens in Shingle Creek Towers. Chairman Davis also discussed a letter he had Statewide Social received from Senator John Milton on the develop- Services Program ment of a statewide social services program which he is proposing to the state legislature. She stated that Ms. Desteian would be interested in the program for the senior 40 citizens. 11/27/74 ~2® Community Education Commissioner Tolve also reported on a job placement seminar developed by the Community Education Council in School District No. 286. She stated that the seminar should be of interest to individuals looking for work. Shelter Workshop The secretary next discussed the shelter workshop concept developed by the Human Services Council. He stated that the Human Services Council is planning a shelter work- shop to serve the northwest suburbs. Adjournment Motion by Commissioner Weyrauch and seconded by Commissioner Tolve to,.-adjourn the meeting. The motion passed unanimously.
