SESSION AUGUST 27, 1973 CITY FALL Call to order The Brooklyn Center Human Rights Commission met in regular session and was called to order by Chairman Ordner at 8:11 p.m. Roll Call Chairman Ordner, Commissioners Mero, weyrauch, Winkelman, and Hastings. Also present were Councilman Bill Fignar, Administrative Assistants Daniel-Hartman and James Lacina. Approval of Minutes: Motion by Commissioner Wgyrauch and seconded 5-14-73 by Commissioner Hastings to approve the minutes of the May 14, 1973 meeting. motion passed unanimously. Human Rights A lengthy discussion ensued relative to the Community Education Human Rights Corrmissioz program for Community Program Education in !-chcol District No. 286. Chairman Ordner stated that certain seminar topics had been chosen by the Commissioners to investigate as part of the Human Rights Commission program. He stated that Commis- sioner Winkelman was investigating the topic of retirement; commissioner Martinsen was investigating the topic of chemical depen- dencies; and Cormnis: inner Weyrauch was investigating the topic of youth employment. It was the consensus of the Human Rights Commission that the Human Rights Commission - Community Education program would be con- ducted during the winter semester. The secretary stated that it was important to publicize the seminars. He also commented that in developing the seminars the topics crust be oriented toward the general public. Recess The Coramissicn recessed at 9:03 p.m. and resumed at 9:24 p.m. -1- 8-27-73 Continuation of the The discussion on the Community Education Human Rights program continued with Commissioner Winkelman Community Education stating that the Commission must develop the Program types of seminars that will.,create interest in the community. Career Development The Commission then discussed the possibility Seminar of offering a seminar in career development for seniors at Brooklyn Center High School.. The Commission decided to contact Mr. James Norwick, Community Education Coordinator for School District No. 286, to discuss the possibility of such a seminar at the high school this fall. Commissioner Weyrauch volunteered to coordinate the seminar. It was the consensus o the Human Rights Commission that a career development seminar be offered at the Brooklyn Center High School during November with the Commission respon- sible for its coordination. Commissioner Hastings commented that publicity could be handled through the school and that the students' parents should be invited. Chairman Ordner stated that he would like to have Mr. Norwick attend the next meeting of the Human Rights Commission to discuss the seminar topics. Public Meeting The Chairman then introduced the next item on Housing on the agenda. He stated that the Human Rights Commission should recommend to the Housing commission the holding of a public meeting to inform-the citizens in Brooklyn Center on the matter of housing. He also commented that the Planning Commission and the Human Rights:Ccmmission should be involved in such a meeting. The secretary stated that such a meeting was the full responsibility of the Housing Commission, since.it is one of their duties and responsibilities. Fall Social Meeting A discussion ensued relative to the possibil- ity of the social meeting of the Human Rights Commission this fall. It was the consensus of the Commission that a social meeting be held on Wednesday, October 10, 1973. -2- 8-27-73 Establish September The Commission then established September 24, 0 Meeting 1973 as the September sleeting of the Hunan Rights Commission. Adjournment Motion by Commissioner weyrauch and seconded by Commissioner Winkelman to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed unanimously.
