HomeMy WebLinkAbout1983 10-12 HRRMMINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA REGULAR SESSION OCTOBER 12, 1983 CITY HALL CALL TO ORDER The Brooklyn Center Human Rights Commission met in regular session and was called to order by Chairperson Kuhar at 7:35 p.m. ROLL CALL Chairperson Kuhar, Commissioners Mayleben, Trautwein, and Rabine. Also present was Administrative Assistant Bublitz. Chairperson Kuhar noted that Commissioners Paulos and Yencho were absent and unexcused from this evenings meeting and that Commissioner Lemke was absent and excused from this evenings meeting. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - JUNE 7, 1983 There was a motion by Commissioner Trautwein and seconded by Commissioner Mayleben to approve the minutes of the June 7,.1983 meeting of the Human Rights Commission as submitted. The motion passed unanimously. DOMESTIC ABUSE BROCHURE The Commission reviewed the brochure and proofed the text for content and grammatical correctness. After reviewing and proofing the brochure the Commission approved the text and cover for the Domestic Assault brochure. There was a motion by Commissioner Trautwein and seconded by Commissioner Mayleben to request the City Council to provide funding for the printing of the Domestic Assault Intervention Project brochure. The motion passed unanimously. There was also a consensus of the Commission to print 10,000 copies of the brochure. THE CHEMICAL PEOPLE/MINNESOTA Commissioner Rabine reviewed the Chemical People/Minnesota information and proposed program. She stated that the program is seeking an organization to sponsor the event in Brooklyn Center and noted several community people indicated an interest but no one had time to chair the committee. The Commission discussed its past involvement in chemical dependency programs including the seminar held by the Human Rights Commission and also the directory prepared by the Commission. Commission members noted that the apparent problem with the seminar is that it was a successful instructional meeting but that no follow-up occurred after the initial session. The Commission generally supported the concept of the Chemical People program but noted that they did not feel they were able to chair the project. After additional discussion the Commission generally agreed that it might be more appropriate for the school district to provide the leadership in the program. The Commission continued to discuss the Chemical People program and expressed a 9 willingness to assist any task force organized to deal with the chemical abuse problem. A motion was made by Commissioner Trautwein and seconded by Commissioner 10-12-83 -1- Mayleben to assist the Chemical People task force in their efforts, particularly to provide the task force with the information and experience gained in the Humm, Rights Commission's background in compiling the resource directory for agencies dealing with chemical dependency and abuse. The motion passed unanimously. OTHER BUSINESS Chairperson Kuhar noted that Ember Reichgott who is now a state senator will address the Commission on Domestic Abuse at its next meeting in November. She noted the. next meeting date is November 10th at 7:30 p.m. ADJOURNMENT There was a motion by Commissioner Mayleben and seconded by Commissioner Trautwein to adjourn the meeting.
