HomeMy WebLinkAbout1969 01-28 HRRM{ Minutes of the Proceedings of the Hunan Rights Commission of the City of Brooklyn Center in the County of Hennepin and State of Minnesota January 28, 1969 The Human Rights Commission met in regular session and was called to order by Chairman Leon Binger at 8:04 P.M. 1.011 Call: Floyd Anderson, Vernon Backes, Majel Berg, Leon Binger, Adrian Dorenfeld, James Knight, Reverend Roy Lindquist and Mark Sazama. Nail Smeaton arrived at 8:58 P.m. Also present was: Bambridge Peterson. Motion by Floyd Anderson and seconded by Mark Sazama to approve the minutes of the January 14, 1969, meeting as submitted. Chairman Binger Vnen introduced a new Commissioner: Rev. Roy Lindquist, to the members of the Human Rights Commission. Rev. Lindquist replaces Rev. Mendell Schiell. Chairman Binger them announced that the State Department of Human Rights would conduct on Saturday, February 1, a; session at the St. Paul Arts and Science Center dealing with the "Role and Responsibilityof Suburban Human Rights Commisaic:h". 8overal members expressed their inte:i=ion to attend ¢.:i;is meeting. Majel Berg then reported that the final report on the • "We Share the Dream" project would be presented at the next meetinc Jim Knight reported on the Human Rights Week project in the absence of Marvin Stavig, project Chairman. Knight reported that Mayor Cohen will proclaim the week of February 16-23 as Human Rights Week in Brooklyn Center. The observance will coincide with National Brotherhood Week. Rev. Lindquist and Marvin Stavig have drafted a letter to the various churches in the community asking them to observe Human Rights Week in their various congregations. Also in conncection with Human Rights Week, a reception will be held at the Crystal Municipal Building on February 16 for local city government and local school officials. Frank Kent, Commissioner of the Minnesota State Department of Human Rights, will speak at this meeting. Chairman Binger asked all members of the local Commission to make a special effort to attend. Chairman Binger reported that Jesse Sandoval's report on the Human Rights Advisory Committee for the Brooklyn Center School District would be presented at the next Co-commission meeting. Chairman Binger next mentioned that the Board of Education of the Robbinsdale School District is till awaiting some nominees for its proposed human Rights Advisory Committee. The selection of the committee should be completed on February 10. Chairman Binger then reported on the Brookdale Health Spa incident by reading a current article from the Minneapolis Star. The article stat3C,'chat the Spa had offered a regular membership to Mrs. Thomas Chase of 3300 - 63rd Avenue North, Brooklyn Centex. -1- w New Business: Chairman Binger suggested that it may be necessary to estab- lish a new meeting night for regular Commission meetings. Then followed a brief discussion of the fire. pormanent committees specified in the proposod by-laws fo;:- the Commission. The Commission recessed at 8:35 P.M. and resumed at 9:07 P.M. Commissioner SMeatoa than presented point by point the newly proposed by-laws for the Brooklyn Center Human Rights Commission. Several of the proposed articles of the by-laws were discussed by the Commissioners present, and several suggestions for charge or alterations were made. Chairman Binger and Neil Smeaton will redraft the proposed by-laws in line with the general suggestions made by the , °sr,::s::•.:. Commissioners. The new proposed by-laws will be presented for approval at the regular meeting of February 11th. Motion by Commissioner Dorenfeld and eeconded by Coranissioncr Smeaton to adjourn.
