Minutes of the Proceedings of the
Human Rights Commission of the
City of Brooklyn Center in the
County of Hennepin and State of
Minnesota
August 27, 1968
The Human Rights Commission assembled at City Hall at 7:30 P. M. and
then traveled to the Work Opportunity Center located at 107 S.E. 4th Street,
Minneapolis for the regular meeting.
The Human Rights Commission met in regular session at the Work
Opportunity Center and was called to order by Chairman Leon Binger at
8:07 P.M.

Roll Call: Mrs. Bea Rankin, Adrian Dorenfeld, Marvin Stavig, Jesse
Sandoval, Rev. Wendel Shiell, Floyd Anderson, Charles Nichols, Mrs. Majel
Berg, Neil Smeaton, and James Knight. Also present were: Kathy Binger,
Mahlon Pitney and Jerry Dulgar.
Motion by Charles Nichols and seconded by Mrs. Majel Berg to approve
the minutes of the August 13, 1968 meeting as submitted. Commissioner
Jesse Sandoval asked that he be allowed to insert in the minutes of this meeting
some additional comments concerning the meeting called by the American
Friends Society at St. Alphonsus Church. Commissioner Sandoval said that it
was his conclusion that the meeting was unruly and that in their rightful use
of free expression those conducting the meeting had displayed a lack of respect.
Minutes approved unanimously.
• Chairman Leon Binger made the following announcements:
a. that he had received a letter from the Citizens Committee
for Better Government of Brooklyn. The letter extended the
support of the Citizens Committee for the work of the Commission,
b. that he and Charles Nichols had attended a meeting of the
Board of the Osseo School District along with representatives
of other Human and Civil Rights groups from the area served by
the district.
ce that the Commission had received a letter from Frank Kent
discussing the "We Share the Dream" program and the buttons
being sold to promote the program and to raise money for
projects of the Department.
Mahlon Pitney then discussed the need for people at the State Fair
to help sell "We Share the Dream" buttons. Chairman Binger appointed Mrs.
Majel Berg to work with Mr. Pitney on the program and in getting people to
help at the fair.
Charles Nichols, Principal of the Work Opportunity Center and
Floyd Anderson, Curiculum Director of Work Opportunity Center gave a
very interesting, informative and provocative presentation about the Work
Opportunity Center from the standpoint of making one consider alternatives tc
some of our present policies in the area of education..
The meeting recessed at 9:25 P. M. and resumed at 9:30 P. M.
Following the recess, a question and answer session was participated
in by those present.
Commissioner's Nichols and Anderson then conducted the other
Commissioners on a tour of the Work Opportunity Center facilities.

Motion by Mrs. Bea Rankin and seconded by Jesse Sandoval to
adjourn the meeting. The Human Rights Commission meeting adjourned at
10:40 P.M.
Those present at time of adjournment were: Mrs. Bea Rankin, Adrian
Dorenfeld, Marvin Stavig, Jesse Sandoval, Rev. Wendel Shiell, Floyd Anderson,
Charles Nichols, Mrs. Majel Berg, Neil Smeaton, and James Knight.
