Human Rights Commission of the
City of Brooklyn Center in the
County of Hennepin and State of
Minnesota
June 25, 1968
The Human Rights Commission met in regular session and was called
to order by Chairman Leon Binger at 8:37 P. M.
Roll Call: John Winkleman, Bea Rankin, James Knight, Leon Binger,
Eugene Sullivan and Floyd Anderson (Neil Smeaton and Charles Nichols were
appearing at the local ward club meeting of the D. F. L. on behalf of the
Commission). Also present were: Jerry Dulgar and Theodore /Villard.
Motion by Floyd Anderson and seconded by James Knight to approve the
minutes of the June 11, 1968 meeting as submitted.
Chairman Leon Binger announced that Mrs. Katie McWatt, Associate
Director of the St. Paul Urban League, who was scheduled to speak to the
Commission this evening would not be able to speak because of illness. Mr.
Binger went on to say that he had spoken to Mrs. McWatt briefly and that she
had conducted him on a tour of the Urban League office and discussed with him
a new program the Urban League had initiated. Mr. Binger said that the program,
as briefly described to him, consisted of formulating a bibliography of significant
books concerning "Black People in the United States", and offering these books
for sale to all interested persons at various locations throughout the St. Paul
area. Chairman Binger and the Commission members then discussed the possi-
bility of buying a number of these books as background material for the
Commission and suggesting to the Brooklyn Center Branch Library of the
Hennepin County system that they acquire some of the books included in the
bibliography.
The Commission viewed a documentary television program on the problems
confronting minority people in American cities, the decay in American cities and
the attempts of the cities to deal with these problems. The program was telecast
by the C.B.S. network from 9:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. and narrated by Walter
Cronkite and several of his colleagues with C.B.S.
Following the viewing, the Commission discussed the program and its
relevance to the Commission's work.
Chairman Binger then announced that the next meeting of the Commission
would be July 9, 1968 at 8:00 P.M.
Motion by James Knight and seconded by Bea Rankin to adjourn the
meeting. The Human Rights Commission meeting adjourned at 10:15 P.M.
Those present at the time of adjournment were: John Winkleman, Bea
Raankin, James Knight, Leon Binger, Eugene Sullivan, Floyd Anderson and
Jesse Sandoval.
