HomeMy WebLinkAbout1968 05-28 HRRMMinutes of the Proceedings of the Human Rights Commission of the City of Brooklyn Center in the County of Hennepin and State of Minnesota May 28, 1968 The Human Rights Commission met in regular session and was called to order by Chairman Leon Binger at 8:05 P.M. Roll Call: Mike Friedman, John Winkleman, Marvin Stavi9, Adrian Dorenfeld, Bea Rankin, Leon Binger, Floyd Anderson, Neil Smeaton and Majel Berg. Also present were: Theodore Willard and Jerry Dulgar. Motion by Neil Smeaton and seconded by Mike Friedman to approve the minutes of the May 14, 1968 meeting as submitted. Chairman Leon Binger opened the meeting by reading a letter from the State Commissioner of Human Rights in which he invited the Brooklyn Center City Council, Human Rights Commission and staff to attend a conference on Creative Concern, at the St. Paul Arts and Science Center at 8:45 A.M. on June 29, 1968. Chairman Binger urged that all of the Commissioners attend the meeting and announced that either he or the secretary would contact them concerning reservations. Councilman Theodore Willard then briefly discussed some developments he had noted in the areas of industry and commerce concerning the employment of minority and unskilled people. Chairman Binger, Vice Chairman Nichols and Commissioner Friedman also commented on the aforesaid subject. Vice Chairman Charles Nichols then introduced Mr. Gary Joselyn, Chairman of the North Suburban Human Rights Council. Mr. Joselyn addressed the Commission in relation to the work that the N.S.H.R.C. had undertaken, the tasks that the Commission might undertake, the problems they might encounter and on the general subject of Human Rights. Mr. Joselyn also discussed the Kerner Report and expressed the opinion that said report should be read by all people working in the area of Human Rights. Mr. Joselyn went on to say that he was of the opinion that the Kerner Report would be of utmost historical significance to future generations in the United States. The meeting recessed at 8:50 P.M. and resumed at 9:00 P.M. Following the recess Mr. Joselyn and the Commission par- ticipated in a discussion of Human Rights. Chairman Leon Binger announced that the next meeting of the Commission would be at 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, June 11, 1968. Motion by Charles Nichols and seconded by Mike Friedman to adjourn the meeting. The Human Rights Commission meeting adjourned at 10:00 P.M. Those present at time of adjournment were: Mike Friedman, John Winkleman, Marvin Stavig, Adrian Dorenfeld, Bea Rankin, Leon Binger, Floyd Anderson, Neil Smeaton, Majel Berg, and Charles Nichols.
