HomeMy WebLinkAbout1968 05-14 HRRM6 4 a Minutes of the Proceedings of the Human Rights Commission of the City of Brooklyn Center in the County of Hennepin and State of Minnesota May 14, 1968 The Human Rights Commission met in regular session and was called to order by Chairman, Leon Binger, at 8:05 P. M. Roll Call: Leon Binger, Eugene Sullivan, Marvin Stavig, Adrian Dorenfeld, John Winkleman, James Knight, Charles Nichols, Arthur Gustafson, Floyd Anderson, Mrs. Leon (Bea) Rankin, Mrs. Majel Berg and Neil Smeaton. Also present were: Theodore Willard and Jerry Dulgar. Chairman Leon Binger opened the meeting by discussi6 the purpose of the Commission; meeting time and frequency, the prospecti format the meetings will take, and that an agenda will be sent to Commission members five to seven days prior to each regular meeting and will be accompanied by the previous meetings minutes. The Chairman officially announced the appointment of Charles Nichols as Vice Chairman and Neil Smeaton as Parliamentarian of the Commission. Vice Chairman Charles Nichols then addressed the Commission and stated that he believed that the Commission would find itself quite busy in light of the experience of similiar commissions in the Twin Cities suburban area. The Vice Chairman went on to say that it was his belief that the Com- mission was not a police force, that this was the job of the State Department of Human Rights, but that this Commission had the right, privilege and obli- gation to refer problems to the state and they in turn could refer them back to the local Commission. Mr. Binger then discussed a tape recording of a speech by Miss Lillian Anthony, Chairman of the Minneapolis Human Rights Commission, that would be played for the assembled group to further broaden their per- spectives in the area of Human Rights. Councilman Theodore Willard then briefly addressed the Commission. Mr. Willard said that the Mayor had appointed him to the Commission as an ex-officio member with the intention of displaying the Council's continuing interest in the area of Human Rights. Councilman Willard went on to say that he hoped the Commission could interest other groups in the community in the work of the Commission. Commission members then presented brief biographical descriptions of themselves for the benefit of the other Commissioners. The meeting recessed at 8:45 P. M. and resumed at 8:55 P. M. The Commission then heard the aforementioned tape recording of Miss Anthony's speech. A brief discussion of the required memo of agreement with the State Department of Human Rights was then held. Discussion of the tape recording consumed the remainder of the meeting. Chairman Binger then announced that the next regular meeting would be held on May 28th from 8:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. at City Hall. Motion by Commissioner Smeaton and seconded by Commissioner Stavig to adjourn the meeting.
