M CW City Employees Think About Your Water Quality So You Don't Have To (Each Time You Turn On Your Faucet) Do you think about the safety of your water when you turn on your faucet? City employees do. The city has nine operable water wells that provide water service to the community. As part of the planned maintenance program, Well #5 was rehabilitated. Rehabilitation included the pump maintenance and removal of 200 cubic yards of sand from the well, which is periodically required in sandstone well formations. One of the higher performing wells, #5 can consistently produce 1,500 gallons per minute (GPM). In 2009, Well #10 will also go through a similar maintenance process. Other maintenance activities included exercising (turning on and off) 1,802 water system valves, which included approximately 425 service and fire line valves to make sure they operate properly, especially in case of emergencies. Yearly preventive maintenance was also completed on all 1,105 fire hydrants in the city. The utility division also responds to requests for service. In 2008, 1,079 calls for service were made, including 700 meter readings and meter changes, 80 sewer calls, and 299 water quality /pressure inquiries. Beginning Saturday, April 18, through Saturday, April 25, hundreds of volunteers from Plymouth to the Mississippi River will line the banks of Shingle Creek removing , r everything from pop cans to abandoned vehicles. Cigarette butts, candy wrappers, and empty pop cans that are tossed or blown into the street often end up littering the banks of our streams. Rain and melting snow transports litter through the storm sewer system and into streams and ponds. The large area that funnels water into a stream is called a watershed. As water travels through the watershed it picks up debris and pollutants and carries them to the stream. If the land is polluted, rivers will be too. Your help is needed to keep the watershed clean. In 2008, more than 350 volunteers worked approximately 700 hours in Brooklyn Center cleaning the banks of Shingle Creek, City parks and roadways. Volunteers collected over 100 bags of debris, auto parts, lots of branches, a few pallets, a traffic cone tires along p g with other miscellaneous trash. In 2009, many of the 31 groups affiliated with the Brooklyn Center Adopt -A- Park /Trail /Street Program will concentrate on a cleanup of their assigned sites during the week. Groups and individuals not already connected with a park, trail, or street will be assigned to an area of Shingle Creek, nearby park, open space, or parkway to pick up trash and debris.
