City Council Thanks Volunteer Citizen Commissioners
The City of Brooklyn Center is very fortunate to have many dedicated citizens willing to serve on commissions.
These commissions provide an opportunity for citizens to assist the City Council in reviewing many important
issues facing the City of Brooklyn Center. There are four City advisory commissions, as well as the court-
appointed Charter Commission and three multi -city commissions. The City Council would like to publicly thank
these commissioners for their dedicated service in 2007.

Embassy Suites Hotel Breaks Ground
Construction has begun on a 175 room Embassy Suites
Hotel on the vacant land adjacent to the Earle Brown Heri-
tage Center.
The Embassy Suites will include a full service restaurant and
lounge, and be connected by a fully enclosed walkway to the
Earle Brown Heritage Center. The hotel will provide guests
access to the Earle Brown Heritage Center's

square feet of meeting space and can accommodate groups
from 20 to 1,000. According to Jim Glasoe, Director of Com-
munity Activities & Recreational Services, "The hotel will be a
perfect compliment to the conference and event facilities."
The City's Economic Development Authority (EDA) is trans-
ferring ownership of the 6.15 acre hotel site to Duluth based
Oliver Companies for construction of the Embassy Suites
Hotel and a second 75 room hotel to be built later.
The Embassy Suites Hotel is scheduled to open in late 2008.

2008 Recycling Calendar and Recycling Guide '
A new 2008 Recycling Guide is scheduled for completion in January 2008. In an
effort to reduce waste and cost, the recycling guide will not be mailed to everyone,
but will be available at City Hall and will be mailed out upon request.
Watch for the new 2008 Recycling Calendar in the mail. It was recently mailed to
residents and contains information about recycling pickup schedules.

Where does the recycled paper go?
Throughout the metro area, residents bring their recyclable paper to the curb for
pickup by the recycling truck. But where does that truck go? And, what happens
to the paper? Here's how the paper recycling process works:

When shopping for the upcoming holiday season, please be aware of your surround-
ings. It is easy to get distracted by the excitement of the season, but it is necessary to

Street snow removal operations begin when snowfall exceeds 2.5 inches and sidewalks are ®®
cleared of snow after a snowfall of one inch. Crews begin plowing as soon as the storm sub-
sides. City streets are divided into ten districts, with plows assigned to each district. Arterial
streets are cleared first, followed by residential streets. The snow plow makes several passes
up and down the street to remove the snow- two to clear the center and two to widen the
street gutter to gutter. Because plowing routes are long, it may be more than an hour be-
tween the initial clearing pass and the final widening pass.

to provide participants a safe, comfortable advancement in gymnastics. Children's classes, including

• All programs 1 hour. In case of rainouts, due to financial and time restraints, only one practice or game will be
made up. Softball season June 16 -July 28; Soccer season June 17 -July 31.
• There are a minimum & maximum number per location. If registration minimum has not been met, a location
could be canceled. If this should occur, you will have the option of transferring child to another location or
receiving a refund.
• Participants are responsible for providing their own transportation to practices and games at other parks. Coaches
are not permitted to transport children. No weekend practices or games.
