HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010 04-20 PRMMINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION FOR THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA REGULAR SESSION APRIL 20, 2010 COMMUNITY ROOM #221, COMMUNITY CENTER CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Sorenson called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. ROLL CALL Chair Sorenson, Commissioners Ebert, Peterson and Starling were present. Commissioners Lee, Russell and Shinnick were absent and excused. Also present were Kristen Green and Community Activities, Recreation and Services Director Jim Glasoe. APPROVAL OF AGENDA By consensus, the agenda was approved as presented. APPROVAL OF MINUTES March 16, 2010 There was a motion by Commissioner Peterson, seconded by Commissioner Starling to approve the minutes of the March 16, 2010 Park & Recreation Commission as presented. The motion passed unanimously. GREAT SHINGE CREEK CLEANUP, ADOPT-A-PARK KICKOFF, BROOKLYN CENTER EARTH FEST CARS Director Glasoe reported that three events would be taking place this coming Saturday, th April 24. Mr. Glasoe noted the Great Shingle Creek Cleanup and the kickoff of the Adopt- A-Park program would begin at 8:30 a.m. with coffee and rolls at the Community Center. Mr. Glasoe added that the event organizers would not need Commission assistance as they had in the past. Chair Sorenson asked if any of the Commission members would be available to clean up Marlin and Lakeside Parks this Saturday morning. Commissioners Ebert, Peterson and Starling indicated they would meet Chair Sorenson at the Community Center at 8:30 a.m. and would then proceed to the parks for the cleanup. CARS Director Glasoe also reminded the Commission of the Earth Fest event that is planned th for April 24 at Brooklyn Center High School, from 1:00-4:00 P.M. Mr. Glasoe noted the City of Brooklyn Center would be hosting a table at the event and encouraged everyone to attend. Council Liaison Yelich arrived at 7:15 p.m. COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT Councilmember Yelich announced that he would be seeking reelection to his City Council seat Council Liaison Yelich reported the City was waiting for the new ownership of Brookdale Mall to be identified and that the City was looking forward to working with the new owners on redevelopment of the property. Commissioners asked about the new FBI b status. Councilmember Yelich indicated the developer was working on the last issues related to the financing and that construction should begin soon. Commissioners asked about the new Mango Food site. Council Liaison Yelich responded that he had no new information on either property, but that there seemed to be some activity at the Mango Tango site. COMMISSION PARKS TOUR PLANNING- May/June CARS Director Glasoe asked if the Commission wished to have a parks tour prior to the May and/or June meetings. After some discussion, the Commission consensus was to meet at the th Community Center at 6:00 p.m. on May 18 and then proceed to Bellvue and Lions Parks, along with Centerbrook Golf Course. The regular meeting will be scheduled to follow at approximately 7:00 p.m. at the Community Center. PARKS SIGNS- Revised Design CARS Director Glasoe showed the Commission a revised sign design with the alternate wording identified at the last meeting. Commissioners noted that the new signs were and difficult to read. Commissioners worked to further refine the language. Mr. Glasoe indicated that a new mock up would be available for the next meeting. HENNEPIN COUNTY YOUTH SPORTS GRANT REQUEST. CARS Director Glasoe reported that the City had not yet received word on the Hennepin County Youth Sports grant request, and that official word was not expected until mid May. Mr. Glasoe noted that he was not particularly hopeful of the grant being funded, as a result of conversations he had with the Grant evaluators related to the c He added that the evaluators indicated that this did not necessarily mean it would not be funded, but advised that local officials contact Hennepin County Commissioner Opat regarding the request. JOINT MEETING WITH CITY COUNCIL/ STRATEGIC GOALS Chair Sorenson asked that this item be moved to the May meeting agenda, as Commissioners Shinnick and Russe OTHER Commissioner Peterson asked about the status of a former section of the Palmer Lake trail that had been seeded, but the turf had not been successfully reestablished. After some discussion it was determined that CARS Director Glasoe would speak to the Public Works Department about the issue and report back to the Commission. SET NEXT MEETING DATE By consensus, the next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission was set for May 18, 2010 with a parks tour scheduled for 6:00 p.m., and the general meeting to follow at approximately 7:00 p.m. in Community Room #221 of the Brooklyn Center Community Center. MEETING ADJOURNED Commissioner Starling made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Ebert, to adjourn the meeting at 7:47 p.m. The motion passed unanimously.
