TO: Gerald G. Splinter, City Manager
FROM: Brad Hoffman, EDA Coordinator 2ow
DATE: April 8, 1991
SUBJECT: Purchase of a Piano for the Heritage Center
The resolution before the EDA authorizes the purchase of a baby
grand piano for the Heritage Center. The EDA has previously
approved the piano in the list of capital outlay items to be
purchased and paid for out of the TIF district.
From our research on the subject of buying pianos, staff is of the
opinion that the most appropriate piano for the Center is the 5'
10" Kawai. By appropriate, I mean that the Kawai offers us an
excellent musical instrument at an affordable price. Schmitt Music
is the sole distributor of Kawai pianos in this area. We need a
piano that is large enough for the facility and will provide us
with good service for many years.
You will recall that we spent over $3,500 over a 9 month period on
piano rentals. Pianos are an item that we have to make available
but we lose money on them. The going rate at facilities such as
the Center is $50.00. By purchasing the piano we will have paid
for it in less than 2 years at the current level of use at the
Center.
The total cost of the piano, along with a dust cover and dolly (to
move the piano), is $11,185. The price gives us a $778 credit for
previous rentals. It will allow us to disregard our current
invoice for $1,100 from Schmitt. We previously estimated the cost
of the piano at $10,000. Our total expenditures for capital
outlays approved by the EDA will be under our estimate by more than
the $1,185 for the piano. I would recommend EDA approval of the
purchase of this piano.
Commissioner introduced the following
resolution and moved its adoption:
