The City Council met in special session and was called to order by
Mayor Philip Cohen at 7:49 P. M.
Roil Call: Philip Cohen, Vernon Ausen, and Howard Heck. Also present
were: Donald Poss, Paul Holmlund, James Merila, and B.E. Peterson, CAAC members
present were: Gil Engdahl and Robert Jensen. Members of Cerny Associates, Inc.
present were: Richard Gilyard and Robert Pierce,
This fourteenth;ppecial meeting of the Brooklyn Center City Council and
the Citizens Architectural Advisory Committee (CAAC) with Cerny Associates, Inc,
was conducted for the purpose of reviewing recommended exterior color schemes
for the Municipal Service Garage and East Side Fire Station and reviewing a
recommended brick sample and related exterior color scheme for the Community
Civic Center.
Richard Gilyard of Cerny Associates presented the recommended color
scheme for the East Side Fire Station to members of the City Council and CAAC
members present. A discussion ensued relative to the exterior paint selection
color selection, procedures used by Cerny Associates and the durability of the
proposed exterior paint. During this discussion Councilman Willard arrived
at 8 :01 Pa M.
Richard Gilyard next presented a recommended color scheme for the
Municipal Service Garage, the scheme being similar to that proposed for the
East Side Fire Station. A discussion ensued during which Councilman Heck and
Mr. Engdahl expressed reservations about the recommended bright color for the
large overhead doors.
Mayor Cohen asked for opinions on color schemes for both the East Side
Fire Station and the Municipal Service Garage from members of the Council and
CAAC members present. After expression of opinions, Mayor Cohen ruled that it
was the consensus of the Council to approve the proposed color schemes for the
Municipal Service Garage and East Side Fire Station with the reservations that
Councilman Heck and CAAC member Engdahl`s comments regarding door colors
for the Municipal Service Garage be taken into consideration by Cerny Associates.
Richard Gilyard next presented the brick recommendation for the Civic Center.
During Council discussion, Councilman Willard suggested that Cerny Associates
view the type of brick used at the Sports and Health Club I in the LaSalle Court
downtown Minneapolis. Also Councilman Willard suggested that members of
the Council look at the park buildings at Folwell Park located at 36th and Knox
Avenue North.
Mr. Pierce suggested that the Council look at an apartment building
located new the St. Louis Turk City Hall on Lake Street which has a very similar
brick and exterior color scheme.
Following further discussion Mayor Cohen asked: if it would be agreeable
to the Council to postpone a decision regarding the exterior brick for the Civic
Center until Monday, May 11, 1970. The Council agreed.
The meeting adjourned at 9:00 P.M.
