Holcombs, Pat LaBelle and Margaret Sandberg.
The meeting was called to order at 7:35 a.m. by Dorff.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
The minutes from March 12 were approved.
FINANCIAL REPORT
: Zastrow reported a balance of $9,024.81 as of April 16,
1996. LaCrosse submitted a check for $5,000 from the Brooklyn Center Lions for the
parade and a check for $2,000 from North Metro Tourism for publicity.
ARTS & CRAFTS:
Holcomb said she has a total of 19 applications.
7:42 a.m. Cohen arrived.
Holcomb will have to recruit some new crafters because of the dates being so close to
the 4th of July weekend. LaCrosse said she could place an ad in the boutique section
of the Star Tribune to appear on Sunday. Holcomb is also working on some of the fast
food restaurants to get their characters to appear at the arts & crafts fair. Graham said
that Radio Aahs has two characters and to contact Gail Graiewski-Moore to see if they
are available.
BINGO:
No report.
FISHING CONTEST:
No report
JUNIOR ROYALTY:
Graham said the applications are not totally out this year.
She has personally given some out. She said she made an administrative decision to
up the cost of the program. This is to get each candidate a t-shirt. This is another way
to identify the children.
Sandberg asked what happened to the Queen program. Cohen said the Jaycees
handled it. It was very costly and they had to provide the chaperones. They were not
able to get the number of chaperones needed. Holcomb said she wants to see the
Senior Citizen contest back. Dorff said since this is a family oriented event, why dont
we have a contest to recognize a family and have them ride in the parade. He said it is
1
something to think about for the future.
CAR SHOW:
No report.
ICE CREAM SOCIAL:
No report.
PARADE:
No report.
PICNIC/GAMES:
Dorff said he will need to start contacting businesses for
prizes. He said we will need a list of the businesses to use when they go out.
LaCrosse will run the list and send copies to Roen, Cohen, Holcomb, Neilson and
Dorff. She said Mary Nelson made some contacts last year and someone will need to
sign up for her territory.
PUBLICITY:
LaCrosse said she has been collecting information and
prices and should have it compiled for the next meeting. She is waiting for a call back
from the Star Tribune. Holcomb asked if she would check into the Minnesota
Womens Press. Holcomb is also interested in reader boards. LaCrosse will find out
the cost.
SUBSTATION:
LaCrosse said we dont really have a contact person yet. The
event is a family movie night at the General Cinema on Friday night.
SUNDAY IN CENTRAL PARK:
LaCrosse passed out the flyers for the event.
She said Casey Jones will emcee part of the evening. Free balloons and cake will be
given out while supply lasts. Volunteers are needed to help blow up balloons. The
junior ambassadors will still do their introductions before the 6:30 entertainment.
TALENT CONTEST:
No report.
8:20 a.m. Karen Youngberg of Discover The Center arrived.
10K & 2 MILE RUN/WALK:
Youngberg said they are hoping numbers grow in
future years and they will then have alternate starting points. She is contacting Edina
Realty, Krueger Realty & Brookdale Dodge for sponsorship. They are targeting their
mailings to running committees. Dave Bauer from Park Center is a member of the
committee. Holcomb suggested contacting Northwest Swim & Racquet Club as a
possible sponsor because they have one of the biggest running groups. Youngberg
said they will drop off flyers at stores which target runners. They would like to give out
some prizes and she wanted to find out which businesses they can contact. LaCrosse
said she should talk to Dorff and Cohen. LaCrosse will contact Brooklyn Park
Recreation to get an okay to use the Palmer Lake trail on the Brooklyn Park side.
Sandberg & LaBelle suggested contacting John Williams at WCCO radio. If he was
2
able to get involved, he would give a lot of free publicity.
OLD BUSINESS:
Dorff said he has been looking over all of the legal aspects
of having a raffle. He said you are required to have a duplicate ticket for everyone,
print the date of the event and have all the prizes to be awarded listed on the ticket.
His suggestion is to forget it.
PAYMENT OF BILLS:
City of Brooklyn Center $ 52.94 Postage
There was a motion by Holcomb, seconded by Zastrow to pay this bill. Motion carried.
NEW BUSINESS:
Sandberg distributed some suggestions for future events. They
are Design-A-Button campaign, Decorate Your Garage Door or Lamp Post campaign,
Sidewalk Artists, Historic Bridal Fashion Show, County Fair Atmosphere on the Earle
Brown Farm, Photo Contest, Taste of Brooklyn Center, and a Center Marketplace at
the Tuesday Night Concerts. Detailed information about these events was passed out.
These ideas will be saved and discussed for future EBD festivals. The committee
thanked Sandberg and Labelle for coming and sharing some new and fresh ideas.
