Earle Brown Days
Meeting Minutes
October 16, 1996
PRESENT:
Roen, Dorff, Zastrow, Bergeland, Cohen, Ernee McArthur and LaCrosse. The
meeting was called to order at 7:32 a.m. by Dorff.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
There was a motion by Cohen, seconded by Zastrow to
approve the minutes of September 17, 1996 with one correction of the spelling of Doff to Dorff.
Motion carried.
FINANCIAL REPORT
: Zastrow reported a financial balance of $10,806.37 as of October
15, 1996. This is a little better than last year. McArthur suggested investing some of the
money into a CD. There was a motion by Cohen, seconded by Roen to have Zastrow invest
as much as possible of the money that would not be used until March. Motion carried.
REPORTS:
Brookdale:
Dorff said the meeting held with Ron Thomas, Deanna McCarthy, Phil Cohen,
Bruce Neilson and himself went very well. Some of the ideas Brookdale had was to hold the
ice cream social on Friday beginning at 6 p.m. This way people can come later and stay later
which is good for business. They would like to continue the use of the Brooklyn Community
Band and create additional interest by having them perform in the parking lot. The music has
tended to be too loud and the businesses have a hard time hearing. There was a problem last
year in running out of ice cream. This is partly because they started serving pretty early and
could not keep track if someone had some already. Other possibilities for entertainment
include singers, dancing, strolling barbershop group. Insurance is a big problem for them.
With the change in ownership, we can solicit individual businesses. Running crazy days
sales costs money because of promotions.
Chamber:
Bergeland reported the Chamber is interested in holding a golf
tournament to coincide with Earle Brown Days. Some businesses may be interested into tying
in a car with a hole in one. They also said the name of Earle Brown Days should be changed.
The chamber said the committee can make a presentation. Cohen suggested waiting until
January.
Arts & Crafts:
LaCrosse reported that Arnie Mavis said it would be okay if the food
vendors from the Arts & Crafts Fair sold their food during Sunday In Central Park as long as
they gave the City 25% of the profits after 6 p.m. Dorff asked if this was negotiable.
LaCrosse said no because the City sponsors the evening and by selling concessions, they
make quite a bit of money. Cohen said it sounds reasonable.
Police Open House:
LaCrosse said she talked to Sgt. Dave Grass and they are
1
interested in having an open house on the Sunday of EBD. However, it takes a lot of staff to
do it. They also have to move the prisoners. Sgt. Grass and Police Chief Kline will bring the
matter up at a future staff meeting.
Car Show:
No report on the location. Bergeland asked if it could be tied in
with the Chamber golf tournament and hole in one contest for a car?
Parade Route:
Roen said it will stay the same as 1996.
Kids Fishing Contest:
Dorff said it is worthwhile for the kids.
Picnic/Games:
Dorff said he is open to new ideas.
Fire Dept:
LaCrosse said she talked to someone in the fire department and he
said you pretty much need to do the water ball contests at the station because a net is
needed. Also, not too many of the new fire fighters know how to compete. Bergeland
suggested having the contest right after the parade.
Brooklyn Historical Society:
McArthur said they take in the area of the old Brooklyn
Township. There will be an open house on Oct. 20. They will highlight a little on the history
of Earle Brown and the Heritage Center and promote membership. She added the Brooklyn
Historical Society is energized; new.
It would be nice to have a day of historical significance at the Heritage Center in which we
could bring in old time events to set up the farm as it was, like bringing in a blacksmith.
Cohen said we may ask the City to underwrite in the budget one day for a loss of revenue and
asked Bergeland what that amount would be. She said $7,000. Bergeland was asked to
check on June 22 for availability and the board of directors will make a request to Brad
Hoffman. McArthur said it would probably be sponsored by the Historical Society.
Payment of Bills:
City of Brooklyn Center $298.35 Ad - Osseo/Maple Grove Press
City of Brooklyn Center 25.92 Postage
Coca Cola 260.35 Pop - parade
There was a motion by Cohen, seconded by Roen to approve payment of these bills. Motion
carried.
