Payment of bills: City of Brooklyn Center $47.34 August postage There was a motion by Graham, seconded by Zastrow to approve payment of this bill. Motion carried. EVENTS: Dorff said he would like to discuss what events we are going to have, when and where they will be held and who is in charge of them. Arts & Crafts Fair - Dorff said he along with Holcomb, LaCrosse and Rick Nelson from the City surveyed Central Park. It was determined it could accommodate the show. He said he was very pleased with what it looked like and the dates would be changed to Saturday and Sunday. Bingo - Dorff said Ditty is in charge. LaCrosse said she thought the swim club would not be interested in sponsoring this again because of the poor turn out this past year. Car Show - Slupske said he has met with Nerburn and that Nerburn would like to try it one more year at Brookdale. Slupske said he would like to see it somewhere else. Bergeland suggested it be held in the office parking lot across the street from the Civic Center. Then everything would be within one block of each other. Slupske will pass this on to Nerburn. Ice Cream Social - Doff asked where it would be located. Cohen said it should stay at Brookdale. He would like to see Brookdale tie it in with a crazy days sale or something. He added the chamber is noticeably absent from EBD. He suggested a sub committee sit down with Brookdale. Cohen, Neilson and Dorff will set up a meeting with the management staff at Brookdale. Cohen said one of the problems at Brookdale is the stores have no local ties. The push has to come from management and the anchor stores. Neilson said he thinks the new management is more community oriented. Junior Ambassadors - Dorff said the program has been a part of EBD for many years and 1 shows a deficit. Graham said there is a commitment from the parents to pay for a facility through a rake-a-thon, newspaper delivery and garage sales. They would not solicit the business community. Graham was asked why they could not use the community center. Graham said they need risers and other items so the children can be seen. Holcomb suggested they look into renting these items and use the room at the community center. This would be much cheaper than using the Heritage Center. Cohen said the subsidy cannot go over what EBD has provided in the past. If they wish to use the Heritage Center, the group would need to sub contract with Judith and raise the additional funds to pay for it. Arts & Crafts Fair - Holcomb said the exhibitors would be spaced around the pond area. It will be a nice layout and it can be done without moving the games. Holcomb is seeking an assistant. She would like to be able to take a break and go indoors to air conditioning. The hot and humid weather is hard on her. Dorff and Zastrow said they would help.  Kids Fishing Contest - Holcomb said the contest is unique to EBD and we should really work on expanding it. She suggested Don Shelby or Ron Sheara as a host. LaCrosse said the cost is about $200 for prizes. Cohen said if the investment is $200, it is well worth it. He said we should keep it and pay for it unless we can find a sponsor. He suggested coordinating with the police department to have an open house. We could get the helicopter from North. He asked LaCrosse to explore this idea with the public safety department. Slupske said in the old days the chamber was extremely involved. He said he would like to know how we get the chamber reinvolved. Neilson said they should be actively involved.  Slupske said it is a two way street and asked, are we offering things they want to be involved  with. He suggested having one or two major draws that are different from other festivals. He suggested a high profile event. Dorff said he would like to finish talking about the current activities before exploring new ones. Parade - LaCrosse said a Lions member said the parade route would be reversed again. Roen said he did not think so. 10K & 2 Mile - Youngberg said the runners have said the route is perfect for the 10K. They do not want it changed. She said they need one more water stop. Publicity - LaCrosse said she would like to see promotional materials look more fun. She will come up with some ideas. New Ideas - Ubelhoer said communications is the missing link. He said there is a huge emphasis on children. If that is our goal, he said we are right on target. If not, we need to involve adults. We have got to make an event unique. Competitions can be tied in to another event. Competitions between community forces gets the word out. Are we getting to the bulk of our community? A kite flying contest, a road race and a flea market with auto parts are examples of events which would set us apart from other festivals. He said we need to embrace the ideas for the future. Cohen said the ideas are good and if someone has an idea they wish to develop, can get folks together to organize it and can get the funds needed to support it, they are welcome to add events. 2 Dorff asked Ubelhoer which event he felt really strong about and would maybe like to be in charge of. He said possibly the competition between fire departments and the road race. He would also like to see bands do their best and show what they can do with a field competition. Holcomb suggested we get Little League involved because they have a very strong organization. NEXT MEETING: Tuesday, October 15, 7:30 a.m., Conference Room A at City Hall. ADJOURN: The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 a.m. Respectfully Submitted, Sue LaCrosse City Liaison 3
