HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997 06-29 EBDM Earle Brown Days Meeting Minute July 29, 1997 PRESENT: Dorff, Bergeland, Nerburn, Graham, Zastrow, Slupske, Cohen, Kuefler, Holcomb, Youngberg, Ubelhoer and LaCrosse. The meeting was called to order at 7:34 a.m. by Dorff. FINANCIAL REPORT : Zastrow reported a financial balance of $8,145.03 in checking and $7,500 in a CD as of July 29, 1997. Car Show: Nerburn said they took a loss because it was rained out. They made money at the Toy Show. He sat down with Judith to discuss how they could make it better and cheaper. He would like to see what the city manager can do for us. If more of the Heritage Center was available, they could have sold 15 more tables. Kuefler asked what are they looking for: enhancing EBD, make the toy show successful or what. Slupske said they are looking at the Toy Show as an anchor. Holcomb said the Toy Show is pretty narrow. Slupske said they would like more events together. Holcomb said it should be community first and attract outside after. The arts & crafts fair loved the facility but like being with the other events. Ubelhoer said they had wall  to wall people in Hopkins even in the rain. Cohen said we dont have a main street and we fight the battle with regional businesses. Cohen added he does not want to go to the city manager for a break on the Heritage Center because it then becomes a discussion for the council to have to look at everyone. The Chamber needs to be involved. Cohen said there was a long discussion about the car show and an agreement was signed that said EBD would be no worse than a break even operation financially, even if washed out. Slupske motioned to drop every event that was not a profit making operation. There was no second. Holcomb asked us to look at who our audience is and said she had some ideas to enhance Sunday afternoon including games, dunk tank, things for kids, and things for teens later. Ubelhoer reminded everyone that this is a wrap up meeting. There was a motion by Cohen, seconded by Ubelhoer to have a planning session on October 21. Motion carried. Arts & Crafts Fair: Holcomb said most of the day on Sunday was pouring rain. Some vendors will still happy with sales. Finance: Cohen said everyone speaks for itself. For example, Dorff solicited businesses and  received $2,000 in gift certificates and prizes. He said it takes a lot of work. Dorffs certificates are out. Holcomb suggested sending Brookpark Dental some fishing contest pictures. They really got into it. Ice Cream Social: No Report. Junior Ambassador: Graham said this was their anniversary and they did a yearbook. She said our 1  1996-97 girl was chosen as the 1997-98 Aquatennial Queen. Last years fundraising went towards a generator and to pay the Heritage Center. This year they hope to purchase a sound system.  Kids Fishing Contest: LaCrosse said it went well. Parade: No Report. Picnic/Games: Dorff said there were 93 adults and 135 children. 10K & 2 Mile: Youngberg said they had 95 people participating. They made $450 to be split between Discover The Center and Brooklyn Center Community Education. A Day At The Farm: Kuefler said he would like ideas to improve for next year. Safety Day: Went well. Motion carried. OLD BUSINESS : The committee expressed their appreciation to the City for all they have contributed.  NEW BUSINESS: It was decided that Toms memo would be discussed at the future planning meeting in October. We will also discuss how to get the businesses involved, what is our community and the finances. We will meet at 7 a.m. on October 21 in Conference Room B.
