The meeting was called to order at 7:40 a.m. by Dorff.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
There was a motion by Ditty, seconded by Roen to approve the
minutes of September 15, 1998. Motion carried.
FINANCIAL REPORT
: LaCrosse reported a balance of 5,141.54 in checking, $8,088.30 in one CD
and $2,075.51 in the other CD. This gives us a balance $15,105.35. There was a motion by Holcomb,
seconded by Roen to accept the treasurers report. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION FOR JUDITH BERGELAND:
LaCrosse read a resolution adopted by the Brooklyn
Center City Council recognizing Judith for her work as a member of the Earle Brown Days board of
directors and on various Earle Brown Days committees throughout the years. Judith said she will serve
on the Year 2000 committee.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Arts & Crafts Fair:
Holcomb said she has placed an ad in the Minnesota Arts Directory again. The
cost should be around $250. There was a motion by Kuefler, seconded by Ditty to pay this bill when in
comes in but not to exceed $260. Motion carried. Holcomb and Roen need more business cards.
Holcomb said many of the exhibitors would like to stay during the fireworks. LaCrosse said she doesnt
mind but is concerned that they would leave during the fireworks. It would be very difficult to have
exhibitor vehicles parked along the service road during and right after the fireworks. The exhibitors
might say they are staying, but what can we do if they pack up and leave. Some of them have done other
things they werent allowed to do. The only recourse we have is to not invite them back the next year.
The food vendors have been very reliable in not packing up early.
Holcomb said we need to saturate the community with flyers. She needs more volunteers. She needs at
least four for setup and one to two for Saturday afternoon and Sunday. She would like to have a poster
committee to distribute around and outside our community. She would like to have flyers passed out at
shows beginning as early as January or February. She said we are not getting to the seniors and we need
to get the businesses involved.
Holcomb would like to host a luncheon or breakfast meeting with some key people. At that time, she
would like to make a presentation. Kuefler said you have to ask the businesses what it would take for
them to get involved. Dorff passed out his ABCDEFG proposal to get the businesses to have sales
during Earle Brown Days. Holcomb said we should go out to businesses. Cohen said you should have a
nice handout on glossy paper to give out to the businesses. He suggested the January meeting be devoted
to marketing.
LaCrosse suggested flyers be distributed to the hotels and motels. Cohen asked if there is anything in the
new resident packets about Earle Brown Days? LaCrosse said she did not think so. Cohen said the car
dealers are a waste of time.
1
There was a suggestion to give out plaques for businesses who donate money. LaCrosse said that gets
pretty expensive. Kuefler said we could do it for the upper donors only. We would have a tier of three
levels.
Hall of Fame:
Kuefler said there will be none in 1999 but they will do one in the year 2000.
Ice Cream Social:
No report.
Kids Fishing Contest:
No report.
Parade:
Ditty said he is waiting for someone to judge the float competition. He has a new
clown club. He would like to keep at 100 units. Dorff suggested there be recognition of a family in
Brooklyn Center. Cohen said it has been done before and if we are going to add events, we need more
volunteers.
Picnic/Games:
Dorff said he will run it the same as last year. It would be nice to add a
competitive ball game between someone like the fire and police departments. LaCrosse suggested
contacting one of the television stations to see if they have any celebrity teams.
Publicity:
LaCrosse said there were hooks put up on the water tower at Centerbrook when it was
painted. The hooks will be used to put up the Earle Brown Days banner each year. The staff at the
garage arranged this for us. Dorff said he would like to send them a letter.
Sunday In Central Park:
No report.
10K/2 Mile Run/Walk:
No report.
Year 2000:
Cohen said there were about 38 suggestions generated at the first meeting. The next
meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 8 at 7 p.m. LaCrosse said the City paid for the postage for
the last mailing and she wanted to know who should pay for future mailings. She also wanted to know if
they did not show any interest, how many mailings should people get. There was a motion by Cohen,
seconded by Kuefler to pay for postage for the mailing and to come up with a budget for the committee.
Motion carried. Cohen said people should get three mailings.
PAYMENT OF BILLS:
City of Brooklyn Center $9.36 Postage
Tony Ditty 7.25 Donuts
