Earle Brown Days
Meeting Minutes
April 24, 2001
PRESENT:
Cohen, Nelson, Youngberg, Dorff, Ballot, Boyer, Johnston, Lemmer, and
LaCrosse.
Henry Dorff called meeting to order at 7:37 a.m.
FINANCIAL REPORT
: Cathy Ballot reported a checking account balance of $1,836.63. There is an
outstanding check for $300 made out to the Powder Puff Clowns. She added the $300 back into the
checking account making the official balance of $2,136.63. There is one CD for $8,981.57 and another CD
for $2,306.23. The total balance is $13,424.43. Sue LaCrosse said she just received a check for $5,000 from
the Lions Club for the parade, which can be deposited. We will check with Tony regarding the outstanding
check to the Powder Puff Clowns. A new check will need to be issued. Henry Dorff will write a letter
thanking the Lions Club.
Arts & Crafts Fair:
Sue LaCrosse said there are 14 crafters and 3 food vendors so far. According
to Pat Holcomb, this is about where we have been in previous years. She will put Toni Johns on the mailing
list to receive Earle Brown Days meeting notices and minutes.
Family Fun & Games:
Henry Dorff passed around copies of the Family Fun & Games flyer. He asked
if there were any changes to be made. It was suggested we eliminate the two-person bean carry. It was also
suggested we change the adult water balloon toss to adult with partner. This could be two men, two women,
or a man and woman. This will cut down on the number of games since the Rockin’ Hollywoods will need
time to set up for a 6:00 p.m. start time. It was suggested the check-in time be added to the flyer.
Ice Cream Social:
Phil Cohen reported he has a meeting on Thursday at Brookdale. Daytons will
sponsor. They will probably have entertainment by a group from Champlin Park High School, which would
bring out lots of parents.
Kids Fishing Contest:
Sue LaCrosse said the business letters will be going out shortly and she hopes
BrookPark Dental will sponsor the event again. Henry Dorff said they have a good time doing the contest.
Music/Fireworks:
Sue LaCrosse said the Rockin’ Hollywoods will perform from 6-10 p.m. and
th
the fireworks are set up. She said those who went to the 90 birthday party saw a preview of some of the
new fireworks we will have this summer. She said it was the first time the fireworks company used them.
Parade:
Sue LaCrosse said there are 41 parade unit applications and 3 bands. The three
bands are Red Wing, Champlin Park and North Branch. Red Wing and North Branch are new bands this
year.
Publicity:
Sue LaCrosse said last year we spent $5,061.72 on publicity - $1,875 on radio ads, $1,350 on
cable television ads, $1,050 on Star Tribune ads and $401 for flyers inserted in the Crystal Sun Post. Based
on the people who attended the arts & crafts fair 221 heard about the event from the city newsletter, 336
from the Sun Post, 107 from the Star Tribune, 13 from radio, and 36 from television. There is no way of
1
determining if the people who saw the television ads or heard the radio announcements got their information
from the paid ads or if they were public service announcements. Therefore, Sue LaCrosse proposed we not
do the radio or television ads. Also, she recommends asking the adults at the Family Fun & Games and the
Kid’s Fishing Contest where they heard about the events. That way we can get a little better picture of where
to put our publicity dollars. There was a motion by Phil Cohen, seconded by Karen Youngberg to approve a
publicity budget of up to $2,000. Motion carried. Sue LaCrosse said she heard on the radio this morning
that most minority people do not read the newspaper. She asked if there were any suggestions on how to
reach the diverse population of Brooklyn Center. Leatha Lemmer suggested the African Journal and she will
get the address and a contact person for Sue. Phil Cohen suggested reaching the Asian community through
the owner of the Northbrook Shopping Center. He will find out where to send the information.
Tennis Event:
Roger Boyer said he liked the look of the Family Fun & Games flyer and would
like to approach the tennis event in a similar way. The event will be from Noon – 2 p.m. and will be a family
or intergenerational activity. They have four courts to use so they will have four stations. On one court they
will have an obstacle course, another roller dome ball, another a target game, and the last court a defender
game. They will have prizes and everything will be supplied. They will spell everything out on the flyer. Sue
LaCrosse said this event could be included as an article in the tabloid. Roger Boyer will get her the
information.
Year 2000:
Phil Cohen said the committee is not really having any more events. The only thing
that might keep going is the Birthday Party. Ed Nelson suggested the Millennium Logo be continued on the
tabloid cover again this year.
Teen Event:
Sue LaCrosse said the person who is coordinating the event, a student at BCHS, has hired a
sound and light show, which will cost $600 under budget. This is good because we have to pay for the rental
of a generator for electricity. She said they are still looking for adult volunteers to chaperone. Many of the
members of the Brooklyn Center Family Services Collaborative are volunteering, but we could still use more.
There will also be two police officers. The event is from 6-10 p.m. on Friday, June 22 in the street between
Grandview Park and Earle Brown School. If any committee members are interested, let Sue know.
Youth Golf Tournament:
Sue LaCrosse said the Lions Club and Karen Youngberg of Remax are
sponsoring the event. The tournament will be for youth ages 8 – 17. Breakfast, a round of golf, hotdog
lunch, and prizes are included.
Other events:
Karen Youngberg suggested having a car show. She said they are having one during
Camden Showboat Days. She said it might be worth our while to go check it out. She said maybe they do all
the work. Phil Cohen said the last time we sponsored a car show, it cost us $800 and we didn’t get anything
out of it.
Henry Dorff said he would still like to see a citywide sale during EBD. Leatha Lemmer said it is really
difficult because most of the retail businesses are corporate. Henry Dorff said he has made a suggestion in
the past about giving recognition to a family in the community. Phil Cohen said you have to have someone to
organize it. He said if we expand the board to more members, maybe one of them would want to pick it up.
As we solicit people for the board, we could ask them if they would want to do this. He also said we should
discuss the possibility of moving the meetings to evenings beginning next year. It should be put on the
agenda for meeting after EBD.
2
PAYMENT OF BILLS:
City of Brooklyn Center $25.84 Postage - March
There was a motion by Leatha Lemmer, seconded by Karen Youngberg to pay these bills. Motion carried.
NEW BUSINESS:
Sue LaCrosse asked if we wanted to order new letterhead. The current letterhead has
the 612 area code and the logo is outdated. It was suggested we move the logo to the middle of the top part
of the page. It was agreed that we would order new letterhead.
Henry Dorff asked who would be interested in soliciting the business community for prizes and gift
certificates. Karen Youngberg said she would help. Leatha Lemmer said she would put a notice of support
in her chamber newsletter.
Sue LaCrosse asked Leatha Lemmer if there would be room for an announcement in the newsletter. It was
decided it would go into the May newsletter. Deadline is May 15 and she needs 300 copies.
NEXT MEETING:
Tuesday, May 15, 7:30 a.m. in Conference Room A.
ADJOURN:
There was a motion by Leatha Lemmer, seconded by Cathy Ballot to adjourn the meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:35 a.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Sue LaCrosse,
City Liaison
