Meeting Minutes
March 19, 2002
PRESENT:
Councilmember Ed Nelson, Larry Roen, Cathy Ballot, Dan Vang, Toni
Johns, Ab Johnston, Roger Boyer, and Sue LaCrosse.
Cathy Ballot called the meeting to order at 7:40 a.m.
There was a motion by Larry Roen, seconded by Toni Johns to approve the minutes of February 19, 2002.
Motion carried.
FINANCIAL REPORT:
Cathy Ballot reported $1,924.92 in checking, $9,326.36 in one CD and another
for $2,380.46. She has entered back into checking $200 and $100 for second and third place float winners.
There was a motion by Toni Johns, seconded by Councilmember Nelson to approve the financial report.
Motion carried.
Phil Cohen arrived at the meeting and Cathy Ballot passed the meeting to him.
Arts & Crafts Fair:
Toni Johns reported that she has met with Sue LaCrosse and is organized for
the year. She has talked to a number of people to try and drum up more participants. She said the Relay for
Life committee would pay for a ½ space booth and stay the whole day.
Karen Youngberg arrived at the meeting.
Budget and Finance:
Sue LaCrosse handed out a copy of the new spreadsheets of the proposed
budget. She said the City did not get hit with any budget cuts during the first round. She said the city
manager asked the city council to reinstate the fireworks and Entertainment In The Park back into the 2002
budget. Therefore, EBD will not have to pay for those line items this year. She said we should keep our
surplus for a future year when the City may not be able to sponsor. Phil Cohen thanked Councilmember
Nelson for the council’s support for these events.
Family Fun & Games:
Phil Cohen said they were excited about the diversity of the participants last
year and he would like to see an increase of efforts for this year.
Ice Cream Social:
Phil Cohen said that Brookdale will sponsor the event this year. They are
working with Bridgeman’s to supply the ice cream. Dayton’s did not want to do this anymore because they
ran out of ice cream last year and found people coming back two and three times.
Kid’s Fishing Contest:
No report.
Music/Fireworks:
Sue LaCrosse said the Castaways would perform from 6-10 p.m.
Parade:
Sue LaCrosse said there are 20 units plus 4 bands so far.
Publicity:
Sue LaCrosse handed out copies of the 2002 schedule of events. She asked the EBD

committee to extend this year’s festival to Sunday, June 30 to incorporate the Grand Re-Opening of the
community center. There was a motion by Karen Youngberg, seconded by Cathy Ballot to extend EBD by
one day. Motion carried. Sue LaCrosse handed out a copy of the flyer for the Grand Re-Opening. She
pointed out that the Year 2000 time capsule will be sealed on that day. Councilmember Nelson said it would
be sealed into the wall.
Tennis Carnival:
Ab Johnston will meet with Dan Vang. Roger Boyer will make a special flyer
again and Sue LaCrosse will see that it is distributed to the youth in the summer programs.
Teen Street Dance:
Dan Vang said the event will be held in his parking lot. He has arranged for a parent
hangout in Chuckwagon. He is still working with Pepsi to supply beverages. He said we did not want to
have just one school involved. Brooklyn Center High School students will act as the host community inviting
students from the other Brooklyn Center schools. He has good lighting in the parking lot. Scoreboard pizza
will provide pizzas at a low cost. He said a survey was passed out to students to help determine what tape of
music to play. Three different types of music stood out. He will have three D.J.’s He will supply a demo
type for the committee to listen to. He talked to the owner of the dollar store and he will donate small give-a-
ways. Sue LaCrosse will arrange for two units from On-Site Sanitation. The theme will be “United We
Stand.”
Youth Golf Tournament:
Karen Youngberg and the BC Lions Club will sponsor. Sue LaCrosse
indicated this event is for youth ages 8-17.

Other Events:
4 of July Celebration - Dan Vang will finalize his plans soon.
Councilmember Ed Nelson suggested Mary Jo Copeland as an alternative for parade grand marshal in case
the person Tony Ditty is asking declines.
NEW BUSINESS:
Payment of bills:
City of Brooklyn Center $89.22 Postage
There was a motion by Karen Youngberg, seconded by Cathy Ballot to pay the bills. Motion carried.

NEXT MEETING:
Tuesday, April 16, 2002 – 7:30 a.m. in City Hall, Conference Room A – Upper
level.
ADJOURN:
There was a motion by Ab Johnston, seconded by Dan Vang to adjourn the meeting. The
meeting was adjourned at 8:25 a.m.
