Earle Brown Days
Meeting Minutes
May 7, 2002
PRESENT:
Councilmember Ed Nelson, Larry Roen, Cathy Ballot, Dan Vang, Toni
Johns, Ab Johnston, Tony Ditty, Henry Dorff, Phil Cohen, Karen Youngberg, and Sue
LaCrosse.
Henry Dorff called the meeting to order at 7:35 a.m.
There was a motion by Larry Roen, seconded by Cathy Ballot to approve the minutes of April 16, 2002.
Motion carried.
Arts & Crafts Fair:
Toni Johns said last year the Historical Society had a table to sell books. This
year the Relay for Life group asked to have a booth and she told them they would have to pay. However, she
asked if we could provide a service to one non-profit organization per year to have a space and not charge
them. Toni Johns made a motion that we allow one non-profit, Brooklyn Center community based group to
set up each year without paying the booth fee. Seconded by Councilmember Nelson. Motion carried.
Budget and Finance:
Phil Cohen said he will give a draft of the business letter to Sue. They will go
out shortly. Cathy Ballot reported a balance of $1,966.15 in checking, $9,366.15 in one CD, $2,385.42 in
another CD for a total of $13,746.70. She said there are no outstanding checks. Sue LaCrosse revised a
proposed budget and reviewed the changes.
Family Fun & Games:
Henry Dorff said Rotary has paid $400.
Ice Cream Social:
Phil Cohen said Brookdale and Fanny Farmer would co-sponsor the event. He
needs to meet with them on the logistics of control including issuing tickets and stamping hands. He has
asked them to get information to Sue regarding details for the city’s website.
Kid’s Fishing Contest:
Henry Dorff reported he has contacted Jan Tiffany of BrookPark Dental and
they want to sponsor the contest again this year.
Music/Fireworks:
No report.
Parade:
Sue LaCrosse said there are 58 units and 8 bands. Toni Johns said Brooklyn Center
High School may not be available to participate this year. She is working on it.
Publicity:
Sue LaCrosse reviewed the publicity proposal. This year she is proposing we drop the flyer in
the Crystal/New Hope Sun Post and take out ads in the Hmong Times and Asian Pages. There was a motion
by Karen Youngberg, seconded by Cathy Ballot to approve the budget proposal for publicity. Motion
carried. Sue LaCrosse said the city now has a website and detailed information about Earle Brown Days will
be included. The city’s website is www.cityofbrooklyncenter.org.
Tennis Carnival:
Ab Johnston said it is all set.

Teen Street Dance:
Dan Vang said he will sponsor the D.J. He said he has gotten a price of $4.00 for t-
shirts, full screen print on front and back. He thinks it will be a good souvenir of the dance. Phil Cohen said
we usually end up with a lot of extra t-shirts and asked if they were going to sell them or give them away?
He also asked if they would wear them? He suggested we go with a $400 appropriation.
Youth Golf Tournament:
Karen said she gave her donation check to Arnie.
Other Events:
It was suggested we promote the grand re-opening celebration to the clubs and
organizations. Sue LaCrosse said that was a great idea.
NEW BUSINESS:
Payment of bills:
City of Brooklyn Center $8.16 Postage
There was a motion by Larry Roen, seconded by Karen Youngberg to pay the bills. Motion carried.

NEXT MEETING:
Tuesday, May 21, 2002 – 7:30 a.m. in City Hall, Conference Room on the
lower level.
ADJOURN:
There was a motion by Karen Youngberg, seconded by Larry Roen to adjourn the meeting at
8:15 a.m. Motion carried and the meeting was adjourned.
