HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002 09-17 EBDM Earle Brown Days Meeting Minutes September 17, 2002 PRESENT: Ed Nelson, Henry Dorff, Phil Cohen, Karen Youngberg, Cathy Ballot, Ab Johnston and Sue LaCrosse. Henry Dorff called the meeting to order at 7:40 a.m. There was a motion by Councilmember Nelson, seconded by Cathy Ballot to approve the minutes of July 23, 2002. Motion carried. Treasurer’s Report: Cathy Ballot reported $1,644.64 in checking. She said there were three outstanding checks from the parade. One for $1,000 for grand champion, second place float, and third place float. She asked if the checks had ever been issued to Tribal Tastes and Mandi’s Minis. No one knew. There was a motion by Phil Cohen, seconded by Karen Youngberg to authorize payment of the bill from the City and if the Lions Club donation is not received, the money would be transferred from a CD. Motion carried. Approval of 2003 Officers: Henry Dorff, Chairman; Phil Cohen, Vice-Chairman; Cathy Ballot, Treasurer; Sue LaCrosse, Secretary. There was a motion by Karen Youngberg, seconded by Councilmember Nelson to accept the 2003 Officers. Motion carried. Board of Directors: There was a motion by Karen Youngberg, seconded by Cathy Ballot to re- appoint Tony Ditty to another three year term to end September 30, 2005. Motion carried. Councilmember Nelson and Leatha Lemmer were unable to continue on the Board of Directors. Phil Cohen will check with the new chamber and Brookdale for potential board members. Arts & Crafts Fair: No report. Budget/Finance: Phil Cohen said next year’s budget will be dependent on how the legislature handles the deficit. Last year aid to local government was taken off the table. He will have to wait to see what the City of Brooklyn Center does. Family Fun & Games: Henry Dorff said it was very successful, but not as well attended. Ab Johnston suggested having some type of baseball or softball event on the fields. He also suggested some type of activity in the roller rink located in Central Park. Karen Youngberg suggested a water wars event. She saw it at another festival and he sets up for free. There is a charge for people to throw balloons. Ice Cream Social: Phil Cohen reported a very successful event at Brookdale. They served 300 plus ice cream treats. Brookdale staff were happy with how it was handled. Kid’s Fishing Contest: Sue LaCrosse said BrookPark Dental is very interested in sponsoring this event next year. Even though attendance was down for the fishing contest, they never get discouraged and are happy with the outcome. 1 Music/Fireworks: Sue LaCrosse said it depends on funds available. As of right now, it is still in the budget. Parade: There was a recommendation to move the judges stand to the area by the Fire Station. There were some complaints of gaps on the north side of the bridge. The line up area could be affected with the construction of the new Earle Brown School. Publicity: Sue LaCrosse said it did not seem like we received any benefit from promoting in the diversity newspapers. Based on the input from door prize drawing slips, most people see it in City Watch and in Sun Post. Phil Cohen said budget may restrict some of our advertising next year. Certificates for businesses will be prepared in advance next year. Tennis Carnival: Ab Johnston reported he is all set for next year. They knew it would be hot this year and they were prepared. They brought Popsicles. The Ninendo was a very popular door prize. He suggested advertising a big door prize early to generate excitement. Teen Street Dance: The area around the dance was very secure thanks to the police department. It was very successful. Youth Golf Tournament: Karen Youngberg said attendance was down by a few people, but Arnie was happy with how it went. Councilmember Nelson wants to encourage our local kids in participating. OLD BUSINESS: Sue LaCrosse got one quote for t-shirts. Phil Cohen would like a sample of all the t-shirts to wash before purchasing. Ab Johnston recommended contacting Roger Boyer for their t-shirt vendor. It was recommended to get a white t-shirt. NEW BUSINESS: The memo from Henry Dorff regarding commissioner recognition was discussed. Phil Cohen asked if this is a purpose for this committee. He said the Special Events Committee has recognized organizations. He said we should see what is being done now and do something different. He said the City Council may want to think about it. There was a motion by Phil Cohen, seconded by Karen Youngberg to carry this agenda item over to the January meeting. NEXT MEETING:All America Room, lower level Tuesday, January 21, 2003 – 7:30 a.m. in the at CITY HALL. (NOTE: Meeting will be at City Hall.)
