the $9,556.69 CD to make it a $10,000 one for six months. Motion carried.
Phil Cohen said he did not receive the response from the business community he had hoped. Part of the
problem is not having a local chamber. He said he would like to wait until the City decides if they will
support the festival. Kathleen Carmody said the Council will make a decision for the first levy in
September/October. Sue LaCrosse said Len Bonander of Americana Fireworks would be willing to sit down
with the committee to discuss financial donors for the fireworks. Phil Cohen, Henry Dorff, and Karen
Youngberg would be interested in meeting with him.
Arts & Crafts Fair:
No report.
Family Fun & Games:
Henry Dorff said they had a good turnout and the event went really well.
There was more diversity and older children.
Ice Cream Social:
David Galchutt reported they had a good turnout. The Mom’s Club was very
helpful. They started thawing the ice cream at 5:45 p.m. They should have started at 5:30 p.m. Most people
came for the free ice cream. The lines were relatively short but steady. They had four servers and served
four big buckets of ice cream, which was the same as last year. There was a good mix of people.
Insurance:
No report.
Kid’s Fishing Contest:
Sue LaCrosse said there were 60 kids. It would be nice to have a little
1
something to give out to the kids. There were only four fish caught this year. Each of these four children
received the rod & reel prizes. Other prizes were distributed by drawings.
Music/Fireworks:
Sue LaCrosse said the music was great. She would like to recommend inviting
Dale Greenwald’s band back next year. Phil Cohen said it was Dale’s support that is important too. Sue
LaCrosse said Len Bonander would not let us hold the fireworks until next year. She explained to him that
we might not have fireworks next year. But, he said that is not how the fireworks industry works. He said
there is fireworks insurance you can purchase and he might offer that as an option for people next year.
Parade:
Many of the spectators were wondering why the Brooklyn Center High School band did not
have band uniforms. Some spectators were wondering why there was not a salute to military people. There
was some discussion about charging for political units.
Publicity:
Karen Youngberg said she would like a larger size poster. Sue LaCrosse said many of the
businesses will not put up the larger size posters.
Tennis Carnival:
Ab Johnston said they had a good turnout. Many of the participants came from
the fishing contest and word of mouth. They had 40 kids and 15-20 parents. Everyone got a prize.
Teen Street Dance:
No report.
Teen Dance:
Daniel LaFond said he saw a lot of the same kids on Saturday that were at the Friday
Street Dance. He said they charged $1.00/hotdog. Dan Vang gave his food away on Friday night because his
was donated. There were no problems.
Youth Golf Tournament:
Sue LaCrosse said that Arnie Mavis reported having a good turnout. He is
thinking of having a family golf tournament next year.
OLD BUSINESS:
Henry Dorff would like to remind committee members to turn in their rating sheet. He would like to do an
evaluation report of how events were rated along with how much they cost. The solicitation letters and
postcards were discussed. Phil Cohen said we must be selective because it costs money. The goal is what
level of solicitation are we going for.
NEW BUSINESS:
Karen Youngberg suggested a car show for next year.
