Meeting Minutes
April 19, 2005
PRESENT:
Karen Youngberg, Ritchie Miller, Councilmember Kathleen Carmody,
Phil Cohen, Shelley Klaessy, Tony Ditty, Cathy Ballot, Pat Milton and Sue LaCrosse.
Karen Youngberg called the meeting to order at 8:04 a.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
There was a motion made by Ritchie Miller, seconded by Tony Ditty to
approve the minutes of the March 15, 2005 meeting. Motion carried.
Financial Report:
Cathy Ballot reported a checkbook balance of $1,750.28 and the CD balance of
$14,607.63. Total amount is $16, 357.91. Sue LaCrosse reviewed the budget worksheet. There was a
motion by Cathy Ballot, seconded by Tony Ditty to join the BC Business Association and to place an ad in
the next issue of the BC Buzz which will be distributed June 9. Motion carried. There was a motion by Phil
Cohen, seconded by Shelley Klaessy to drop our membership in the Minnesota Festivals & Events
Association. Motion carried. There was a motion by Phil Cohen, seconded by Tony Ditty to rollover our CD
for three months. Motion carried. There was a motion by Phil Cohen, seconded by Ritchie Miller to approve
the budget worksheet with the expense changes related to the portable restroom at the arts & crafts fair,
publicity ads, and membership to the BC Business Association. Motion carried.
Arts & Crafts Fair:
Sue LaCrosse said there are only 5 crafters signed up so far. This is down from last
year. She placed a $150 ad in the Star Tribune a week ago Sunday and only received one call from it. Pat
Milton suggested that last year’s exhibitors could be called. Shelley Klaessy said she would check with their
arts & crafts promoter about distributing information to the exhibitors at Brookdale’s show.
Budget/Finance:
The solicitation letters went out. Personal calls may be made too.
Family Fun & Games:
Karen Youngberg said she is looking for help in soliciting the business
community for prizes and gift certificates. Councilmember Kathleen Carmody said she would go to the hotels
and restaurant strip again. Tony Ditty said he will take the Humboldt Square area. Karen Youngberg will
call Henry to see if he could make some contacts. Shelley Klaessy said she would solicit the stores at
Brookdale.
Ice Cream Social:
Shelley Klaessy is still working on ice cream. She will contact Bridgeman’s
and if they can’t do it, she will contact Culver’s. Everything else is done. She received a picture from the
group to be used for publicity. Karen Youngberg suggested maybe the musicians could stroll around.
Kid’s Fishing Contest:
No report.
Music/Fireworks:
Sue LaCrosse said everything is all set.
Parade:
Tony Ditty reported there are 28 units and 4 bands. He would like the entry forms mailed out
th
again. Sue LaCrosse suggested in honor of their 50 anniversary that the Lions Club be named our Grand
Marshal. Maybe charter member Larry Roen could ride along with one of the newer members. Tony Ditty
will talk to the Lions Club.
Publicity:
Sue LaCrosse reported the schedule will go out in City Watch later this week. She put up two
displays of colorful posters at the community center. Mayor Kragness will highlight the festival the next time
she is asked to do a Cable 12 segment. There has been quite a bit of interest already and she would like to
keep the momentum going.
Golf Tournaments:
Karen Youngberg said they are all set.
Other Events:
Pat Milton said she has gotten her permit from the City and has ordered
supplies from Carousel Bingo. It was suggested she give out cash awards rather than prizes. She will
probably charge 25¢ per card and 50¢ for a coverall.
Old Business:
Last year Biff’s cleaned the toilets after the arts & crafts fair started. Pat Milton
suggested we have them cleaned before 9 a.m. Sue LaCrosse said this year we will be contracting with On-
Site Sanitation and she will request that.
New Business:
Sue LaCrosse said she received a call from a nurse who is part of a nurse ministry
organization with several churches in Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park. They would like to have a booth
to take blood pressure and distribute information on strokes and heart attacks. The committee decided this
would be a good idea as it is important information and it would be additional publicity.
Bill Pay:
City of Brooklyn Center $92.50 Postage
There was a motion by Phil Cohen, seconded by Ritchie Miller to pay the bill. Motion carried.
NEXT MEETING:Council/Commision Conference
Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at 8:00 a.m. in the
Room, lower level at CITY HALL.
ADJOURN:
There was a motion by Phil Cohen, seconded by Ritchie Miller to adjourn the meeting. The
meeting was adjourned at 9:05 a.m.
