HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000 02-08 Y2000M BROOKLYN CENTER YEAR 2000 CELEBRATION TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2000 , 7 PM BROOKLYN CENTER CITY HALL - CONFERENCE ROOM B MEETING MINUTES The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Phil Cohen. In attendance: Phil Cohen, Chairman; Sean Rahn; Jim Glasoe, City of Brooklyn Center; Robert Becker, Brooklyn Center Lions Club; Doug Darnell, Brooklyn Center Community Education; Myrna Kragness, Mayor; Kay Lasman, Councilmember; Ed Nelson, Councilmember; Sue LaCrosse, Earle Brown Days. REPORT - WINTER FAMILY FUN DAY It was a great success. About 350-400 persons had sleigh rides. There were 10 snow sculpture entrees and about 250 stopped by for refreshments. Phil thanked the Brooklyn Center Lions Club for providing the financial backing and providing volunteers to work the event. The cost of the event was $630. The sleigh was $450 and the expenses for prizes and refreshments was $180.  Phil said it was exciting to see the induction of 25 youth into the Leos Club. He said when an organization steps forward to support youth, they cannot be thanked enough. REPORT - 89TH BIRTHDAY PARTY Phil said there were 74 registrations. Entertainment will be provided by the Brooklyn Center High School Choir members. The souvenir will consist of a heavy glass mug with the 89th birthday logo engraved on it. Phil said they have ordered 100 @ $5.40 each. This will exceed the budget by $40. He said Margaret Sandberg is taking care of all the decorations and the cost will be within the $100 allocated. Brookdale will provide helium for the balloons. The new manager of Cub is providing birthday cake for 125 persons. Phil thanked Sean for doing the legwork on the glass mugs. MILLENNIUM APPLICATION STATUS: Phil reported the applications will go out tomorrow. He will take them to the post office.  TREASURERS REPORT: No report. Phil said we will know the financial condition by the next meeting. Then we will know if more memorabilia can be ordered APPROVAL OF MINUTES: There was a motion by Doug Darnell, seconded by Kay Lasman to approve the minutes of the board of directors of December 7, 1999. Motion carried. OTHER BUSINESS: Phil asked for approval for additional expenses for the birthday party. He would like to get some flowers and the mugs cost $40 more than budgeted. There was a motion by Myrna Kragness, seconded by Robert Becker to approve an additional $120 for the birthday party. Prayer Breakfast - Ed reported the breakfast will be Saturday, April 8 from 8-10 a.m. at the Heritage  Center. Cost is $10. Evelyn Christenson will speak. She has written the book, What Happens  When Women Pray. There will be special music by Nancy Ellis and Herb Johnson. Tickets are available from Rev. Hobbs. Phil said he would like to see the high schools that represent Brooklyn Center perform at other Year 2000 events. Next meeting: Tuesday,March 14, 7 p.m. Conference Room B.
