HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000 06-01 Y2000M BROOKLYN CENTER YEAR 2000 CELEBRATION TUESDAY, JUNE 1, 7 PM BROOKLYN CENTER CITY HALL - COUNCIL CHAMBERS MEETING MINUTES The meeting was called to order at 7:09 p.m. by Phil Cohen. In attendance: Phil Cohen; Tony Kuefler, Earle Brown Days; Diane Spector, Rotary; Sue LaCrosse, Recreation Department; Kay Lasman, Councilmember; Sean Rahn, Discover The Center; Ed Nelson, Councilmember; Myrna Kragness, Mayor; Henry Dorff, Earle Brown Days; Sue Low, Brooklyn Community Chamber. Phil asked if there were any comments or questions about the minutes. There were none. Phil reported Earle Brown Days has approved $1,000 toward Year 2000 celebration. Tony said he has a commitment from the Council to put special signs on their vehicles during the parade. Each unit would have a different sign referring to unit #95. Then on unit #95, there would be event signs, such as Softball Tournament in Central Park, Free Swimming and others. The wrestling vehicle will have information about the Main Event and the names of the wrestlers.  Councilmember Lasman suggested the sign say something like, Mayor Kragness asks what is  significant about February 11? It was suggested the Year 2000 unit be renamed Unit #95 for the tabloid. This way it will not give away what unit #95 is. It was suggested a fake license plate be make for unit #95. It was decided we would use the Millennium logo on the handout. Sue LaCrosse reported on the logo contest. She said there were only four or five entries. They were passed around. Phil would like to see if an artist could take them and make one logo out of it. He would like to use what we have and blend into one. Sue said there was a graphic artist who called a few months ago and she will give her a call to see if she is still interested. Phil said the North Metro Tourism will contribute $500. The Salvation Army would like to be involved and Rotary will be supportive. Mayor Kragness suggested sending out a letter from her with information from the White House. The letter would be sent to the churches.  Phil said he invited Sue Low, President of the Brooklyn Community Chamber to attend tonights meeting. He would like to get the Chamber involved.  Phil said he and Tony met with the City Manager and Jim Glasoe in regards to the Citys involvement. He said we will be in full gear for planning in August and September. He said the City Manager wants a proposal of what we pull together. Phil would like to go before the Council in June to get their approval before proceeding. Budgetary consideration should go before the Council by the end of July. Mayor Kragness said she thought we were going to have specific events for different age groups. Diane suggested a Year 2000 theme for the summer parks programs. Phil passed out a draft of a handout to be given out at various Earle Brown Days events such as the picnic/games, ice cream social and Sunday In Central Park.  Mayor Kragness suggested a New Years Eve Ball for the New Years Eve of 2000. The Heritage Center and Brookdale were suggested. Sue LaCrosse said Brookdale might be better. The Heritage  Center will probably book for New Years Eve. Tony reported for the Historical Society. They would like to have an open house at the Heritage Center with custom tour guides. They will have a sample of the Heritage book on display at this time. In October of 2000, they will have their annual meeting and would like to tie in an historic event. In December of 2000, the book will be ready. It was suggested the Historical Society be in charge of the Bicentennial Time Capsule. Tony will check with them. Phil suggested a 4th of July patriotic lighting contest. He was hoping to get Rotary to sponsor. He also suggested getting the American Legion involved with this. Diane will take the suggestion back to Rotary. Mayor Kragness suggested changing the celebration to Millennium Celebration because of the problems associated with Year 2000. Tony said the problem is with Y2K. Nothing was decided. Councilmember Lasman suggested keeping the lights on for National Night Out. Sue Low said she would like to see a theme with businesses such as Buy Brooklyn with discounts. Phil said Sue LaCrosse will work on the handout and send out to everyone here for approval. The meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m. Respectfully Submitted, Sue LaCrosse Program Supervisor
