HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000 09-12 Y2000M BROOKLYN CENTER YEAR 2000 CELEBRATION TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2000 , 7 PM BROOKLYN CENTER CITY HALL - CONFERENCE ROOM B MEETING MINUTES The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. by Phil Cohen. ATTENDANCE: Henry Dorff, Earle Brown Days; Baylon F. Loosbrock, Rotary; Sue Low, Brooklyn Community Chamber/Allegra; Kay Lasman, Councilmember; Pastor Bruce Hobbs, Church/Prayer Breakfast; Pastor Timothy Johnson, Prayer Breakfast; Ed Nelson, Councilmember; Lee Skavanger, District 279 Community Education; Doug Darnell, District 286 Community Education; Myrna Kragness, Mayor; Sean Rahn, Vice Chairman; Sue LaCrosse, Earle Brown Days; Phil Cohen, Chairman. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF MARCH 14, 2000 There was a motion by Henry Dorff, seconded by Kay Lasman to approve the minutes of June 13, 2000. Motion carried.  TREASURERS REPORT Phil Cohen reported a checkbook balance of $2,136.91. Since then money received has included a $100 contribution from Carson & Clelland and $210 memorabilia purchases. Total funds equal $2,446.91. There appear to be no outstanding bills due at this time. There was a motion by Myrna  Kragness, seconded by Kay Lasman to approve the treasurers report. EVENTS UPDATE Sue LaCrosse said there will be a free swim day at the community center on Tuesday.  October - Childrens Halloween Party on Saturday, October 28. November - Doug Darnell said the Family Resource Center will open mid October and the open house will probably be in November. Phil Cohen said the Historical Book will be available in November. Pastor Bruce Hobbs and Pastor Timothy Johnson said there are about a half dozen churches that have shown an interest. Pastor Hobbs said they would have liked to hold the event at Brookdale but it will be in the middle of construction. Lee Skavanger suggested Park Center High School auditorium and he would pick up rental cost. The event will be held on Sunday, November 19 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. with a good will offering to CEAP for Thanksgiving baskets for Brooklyn Center families. December - Holly Sunday on Sunday, December 3. January - Snow Days event in Central Park including ice sculpture and sleigh rides. Sue LaCrosse asked where they money would come from to pay for sleigh rides. She said the city has not been  reimbursed for this years sleigh ride and fireworks. She said city council approved a budget for Year 2000. We do not expect to get reimbursed for these events. Phil Cohen said he has had some discussions with the city manager. He thought the Lions Club would want to sponsor this event again. 1 February - 90th Birthday Party with fireworks. The contents of the new time capsule will be displayed. MILLENNIUM BOOK UPDATE Lee Skavanger distributed a draft of the Millennium Book. He said he is not sure how much time teachers would take with it. Doug Darnell suggested having each school designate one grade to do the book. Several people suggested putting it on tape or disk. Kay Lasman said teachers need to have specific directions. Lee Skavanger said he would like to meet with all of the BC principals. Sue  LaCrosse suggested doing it at the principals luncheon sponsored by the recreation department. She said she would check that out. Lee Skavanger and Doug Darnell will meet with representatives of a few schools for their input. MEMORABILIA/SOUVENIR UPDATE Phil Cohen said he has ordered the Millennium pins from Taiwan. He arranged to order through Sharon Knutson because they wanted something like a city. He said they will say 2000-2001 on them. They are expected at the end of the month. PUBLICITY No report NEXT MEETING Tuesday, October 10.
