HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001 11-16 SECM BROOKLYN CENTER YEAR CELEBRATION COMMITTEE TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2001, 4 PM BROOKLYN CENTER COMMUNITY CENTER MEETING MINUTES Phil Cohen called the meeting to order at 4:08 p.m. ATTENDANCE Baylon F. Loosbrock, Rotary; Tony Kuefler, Time Capsule; Kay Lasman, Councilmember; Councilmember Ed Nelson, Sue LaCrosse, Earle Brown Days; Phil Cohen, Chairman. FINANCIAL REPORT Phil Cohen reported a balance of $2,480.38. Phil Cohen still has some outstanding receipts for his submission of the Year 2000 packet to the White House. EVENTS UPDATE Time Capsule – Tony Kuefler reported that he will hold it open and people can submit articles at the birthday party. He will draft a letter. FUTURE OF COMMITTEE: Phil Cohen said we need to select a name and authorize Henningson to amend our articles of incorporation. Tony Kuefler handed out an idea list of possible names. He based his ideas on the special recognition to be given to individuals. Should we have this as an annual event to recognize people every year on the City’s birthday? Kay suggested a name using Millennium. Centennial Celebration Committee was suggested. There was a motion by Tony Kuefler, seconded by Kay Lasman to adopt the name Brooklyn Center Special Events Committee. Motion carried. There was a motion by Baylon Loosbrock, seconded by Ed Nelson to authorize the name change and amend the articles of incorporation to reflect that change. Motion carried. BIRTHDAY PARTY Location – Kay Lasman reported that the Harvest Room is booked. The City will subsidize up to $4,000 for the room rental. Normally, the room rental is $6,000. Food and beverage expenses would decrease the amount for room rental. If we sell 100 tickets @ $20.95 = $2,095.00, which covers the other $2,000 for room rental. There is also an 18% gratuity charge and 6% tax. The minimum sales charge for a bartender is $500. If we do not sell $500 worth of drinks at the bar, we will be charged $100 for the cost of the bartender. Menu is stuffed chicken breast, garlic mashed potatoes, baby green beans, and chocolate praline crunch cake. She would like to encourage people from other groups to attend the party. Entertainment – Kay Lasman said Cooper is not available. Phil Cohen said he has booked Joe Brough. Kay will check with some other schools to see if they have entertainment that fit with our theme. 1 Deorations – Phil Cohen said he would like to have the theme Brooklyn Center honors America. He has asked Margaret to coordinate the decorations again. He has some banners. Ed Nelson asked if the Historical Society could have something there. Phil Cohen asked Tony Kuefler to talk to Ernee about doing something. Fireworks – Phil Cohen said the fire chief said no way to fireworks. Ticket Price – Other expenses associated with the party are: Police $ 150 Joe Brough $ 700 Decorations $ 50 Bartender $ 100 Total $1,000 Phil Cohen will ask for sponsorship from some of the organizations. Sue LaCrosse asked if there would be any complimentary dinners given to any of the people that are being recognized or to the band members. Phil Cohen said that everyone pays. Kay Lasman said we would have to have someone check names thoroughly when people come in. Sue LaCrosse said there was a couple that came last year that did not pay. She had asked Margaret who they were from the pictures Margaret took. They were not on the list. There was a motion by Tony Kuefler, seconded by Kay Lasman to charge $30 per person. There was a motion by Phil Cohen, seconded by Ed Nelson to amend the ticket price to $25 per person. Motion carried. Promotion – Sue LaCrosse said a small write up would go in the next City Watch, which will go out towards the end of December to residents. She said Tony Kuefler has a flyer already on his computer and suggested he design the next one. Phil Cohen said he has flag paper. Tony Kuefler said it is ugly. Civic Group Involvement – Phil Cohen will contact the Legion to do a color guard presentation, but will coordinate it with Myrna who was going to contact the Boy Scout Organization. Groups to be included: Lions Club, Rotary, Chamber, City Council, commissioners, department heads, Historical Society, Taxpayers Association, Prayer Breakfast Committee, Brooklyn Center Asian community, Muslim organizations, churches – ask to go in bulletins, Legion, Palmer Lake VFW, Crystal VFW, Knights of Columbus, Crystal Knights of Columbus, fire & police associations, Women’s Club. NEXT MEETING Friday, December 7, 4 p.m. Brooklyn Center City Hall, Conference Room A – upper level.
