There was a motion by Tony Kuefler, seconded by Doug Darnell to approve the minutes of March 6,
2001. Motion carried.

Phil Cohen reported a balance of $2,480.38.
EVENTS UPDATE
Time Capsule
– Tony Kuefler reported that he talked to Mike McCauley and the storage area for the
time capsule will be ready in April. To be on the safe side, we should allow for June. We may be able
to coordinate the time capsule with an open house of the remodeled community center. Tony Kuefler
said this would allow a chance for organizations to put more items in the time capsule. Phil Cohen
said he would like to schedule a meeting in about three weeks and hype the time capsule thing.
BIRTHDAY PARTY
Location
– Phil Cohen reported that Mike McCauley’s view is to upgrade the 2002 Birthday Party to
the Earle Brown Heritage Center. Phil said he was impressed with what was done last time and has
set aside money to cover the cost of the room. Joe Brough’s band has been reserved. Phil Cohen
said Mike McCauley suggested a special presentation where organizations could recognize an
individual in their organization. It is acknowledged that each organization conducts awards
ceremonies for their members. This would be in addition and would be presented in front of more
people. Phil Cohen said he thought this was a good idea.
Fireworks
– Phil Cohen said fireworks are questionable. He said the Lions Club does not believe in
helping pay for fireworks. The logistics of holding the event at the Heritage Center are not conducive
to fireworks. It is too close to the freeway. Also, in lieu of the events happening, people may
mistake the sounds of fireworks during the winter for something else. It was decided by the
committee that there would be no fireworks for the 2002 birthday celebration.
Theme for Birthday Party –
Phil Cohen said it would be nice to have a theme of “Honor America.”
He said Kay Lasman could bring in some school groups. He said he was at an event recently where
Cooper High School Chamber Singers performed. They were great. Myrna Kragness suggested
inviting the boy scouts to do a presentation of flags. She will contact the Vikings Boy Scout Council.
1
Myrna Kragness said she would like to see it go forward. Unfortunately, we get many of the same
people every year. Baylon Loosbrock said he likes the idea of the organization recognition. Myrna
Kragness suggested a Mayor’s award and inviting Little Leagues to be involved.
There was a motion by Myrna Kragness, seconded by Kay Lasman to adopt this project and go
forward. Motion carried.
FUTURE OF COMMITTEE
Phil Cohen said we could reform into a special events committee. He said when Ernee McArthur was
working for the Chamber, she was able to put together a calendar of events for all organizations to
avoid conflict with event dates. Phil Cohen reported that Henningson said we could continue to the
th
100 birthday by amending the bylaws and name.
Baylon Loosbrock suggested renaming to Brooklyn Center Celebration Committee. Tony Kuefler
th
said he would like to take into account the 100 birthday. Myrna Kragness suggested Countdown to
100. Phil Cohen suggested everyone bring in names for the next meeting. Tony Kuefler asked if we
see this committee continuing through 2011. Bob Becker said he is not happy with the birthday party
theme. He suggested something around special events so that it is more wide open. It was suggested
the purpose of the committee be community special events, but have a different name. Kay Lasman
asked if there is community support. Brooklyn Center Celebration Committee was suggested. Phil
Cohen said he would like to get the next meeting notice out quickly.
No name change was decided at this meeting.
