BROOKLYN CENTER SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE
THURSDAY, JANUARY 24, 4 PM

MEETING MINUTES
Phil Cohen called the Brooklyn Center Special Events Committee meeting to order at 4:06 p.m.
ATTENDANCE
Baylon F. Loosbrock, Rotary; Kay Lasman, Councilmember; Ed Nelson, Councilmember; Pastor Bruce
Hobbs, Thanksgiving Service; Sue Low, Brooklyn Community Chamber; Dan Vang, Community
Representative; Lee Skavanger, Osseo Community Education; Sue LaCrosse, Earle Brown Days; Phil
Cohen, Chairman.
There was a motion by Pastor Hobbs, seconded by Councilmember Kay Lasman to approve meeting
minutes of January 17. Motion carried.
FINANCIAL REPORT
Phil Cohen reported a balance of $2,480.38.
Bills authorized for payment was $205 and income from Brooklyn Center Tax Payers Association was $200
for a cash balance of $2,475.38. The Prayer Breakfast Committee has approved $100 for contribution.
There was a motion by Councilmember Kay Lasman, seconded by Councilmember Ed Nelson to approve
the financial report.
RECOGNITION RECIPIENTS:
Phil Cohen reported to date that Brooklyn Center Rotary, Earle Brown Days Committee, Brooklyn Center
Taxpayers Association, AARP, Brooklyn Center Prayer Breakfast, Inc. and Brooklyn Center Special Events
Committee have approved their selections for the award. Brooklyn Center Lions Club, Brooklyn
Community Chamber, Brooklyn Center District 286 Community Education, Osseo District 279 Community
Education, Brooklyn Peacemaker, and Brooklyn Center Women’s Club are in the process of making their
selection.
Board Addition
– There was motion by Councilmember Ed Nelson, seconded by Councilmember Kay
Lasman to appoint Dan Vang to the Board of Directors of the Brooklyn Center Special Events Committee.
Motion carried.
BIRTHDAY PARTY CELEBRATION:
Program Addition –
Phil Cohen reported that Dr. Orn has made arrangements for Twin City Bronze, a
group of 10-11 Bell Ringers to perform for about 20 minutes. They have a program that will fit right in
with our theme. The cost is $500 and Dr. Orn will assist financially if needed and will invite them to dinner
as his guests. There was a motion by Pastor Hobbs, seconded by Lee Skavanger to approve an expenditure
of $500 for the program addition of the Twin City Bronze. Motion carried.
Banquet Report
– Kay Lasman said the meal itself is set. She said it is up to us to keep it regulated. She
said the Heritage Center could provide refreshments for the Park Center students and the Boy Scouts.
There was a motion by Pastor Hobbs, seconded by Councilmember Kay Lasman to approve funds to
provide refreshments for the youth. Motion carried.

Trophy
– Phil Cohen reported there is a place for two plates. He recommended the bottom one say
Brooklyn Center Special Events Committee 2001 Community Service Award. He recommended the top
one say the name of the person and sponsored by _________. He will bring one to the next meeting for
approval.
Decorations
– Phil Cohen said Margaret Sandberg has been over to the Heritage Center. She is working
with Mailboxes for placemats and Northport School for decorations. Sue Low passed around some pins
that are available for purchase. She also suggested patriotic butter mints. Phil Cohen said he has quite a bit
of banners and lights to use for decorations.

Thursday, January 31, 4:00 p.m. Brooklyn Center City Hall, Conference Room on lower level.
