BROOKLYN CENTER SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2003, 4:00 PM
MEETING MINUTES
Phil Cohen called the Brooklyn Center Special Events Committee meeting to order at 4:11 p.m.
ATTENDANCE
Tony Kuefler, Taxpayers Association; Kay Lasman, Council Liaison; Baylon Loosbrock, Rotary; Len Lasman;
Sue Low, Business Community; Tom Shinnick, Lions Club & Historical Society; Pastor Bruce Hobbs, Prayer
Breakfast; Sue LaCrosse, recreation staff liaison; Phil Cohen, Chairman.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
There was a motion by Tony Kuefler, seconded by Pastor Bruce Hobbs to approve the minutes of February
18, 2003. Motion carried.
FINANCIAL REPORT
Phil Cohen reported a checkbook balance of $218.84. He said the committee approved the balance be spent
down. There was a motion by Kay Lasman, seconded by Sue Low to approve the financial report. Motion
carried.
CIVIC GROUP INVOLVEMENT
Phil Cohen said he would contact the clubs and organizations after we decide whether to go forward.
DATE OF EVENT
Kay Lasman reported that both February 7 and 14 are tentatively booked. The current price is $3,000 for the
room. Food and beverages would apply towards the cost of the room. Phil Cohen said we would need to
charge $30 per person. We can no longer subsidize the dinners.
PROGRAM/ENTERTAINMENT
Kay Lasman will check with Champlin Park to see if they have a group that could perform. Phil Cohen said he
has already talked with Dale Greenwald to see if his band would be available should the committee decide they
want to go forward with the event.
THEME
Phil Cohen said Margaret Sandberg has suggested an “Our Town” theme.
There was a motion by Pastor Bruce Hobbs, seconded by Sue Low to go ahead with the event and to hold it on
February 7. Motion carried. Kay Lasman will contact the Heritage Center and release the February 14 date.
MEETING SCHEDULE
The meeting schedule is as follows: October 16, November 13, December 11, January 8, 22 & February 5 at
4:00 p.m. at the community center. There was a motion by Kay Lasman, seconded by Pastor Bruce Hobbs to
approve the meeting schedule. Motion carried.
NOMINATING COMMITTEE
Phil Cohen said we should have an election of officers and board members. There was a motion by Kay
Lasman, seconded by Sue Low to appoint Tony Kuefler as the chairman of the nominating committee. Motion
carried.

OTHER BUSINESS
Phil Cohen said the only thing hanging loose is the theme.
Pastor Bruce Hobbs said he has a laminating machine if we wanted to laminate placemats.
Baylon Loosbrock suggested depicting a different decade on each table starting with 1911.
Phil Cohen suggested “from potatoes to a regional center” and said the Historical Society would need to be
involved.
ADJOURNMENT
There was a motion by Kay Lasman, seconded by Len Lasman to adjourn the meeting at 4:44 p.m. Motion
carried.
