BROOKLYN CENTER SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE

MEETING MINUTES
Phil Cohen called the Brooklyn Center Special Events Committee meeting to order at 4:04 p.m.
ATTENDANCE
Dale Greenwald, Kay Lasman, Council Liaison; Baylon Loosbrock, Treasurer; Len Lasman; Dorothy
Jacobson, Women’s Club; Phil Cohen, President; Pastor Bruce Hobbs, Vice-President, Sue LaCrosse,
recreation staff liaison.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
There was a motion by Dorothy Jacobson, seconded by Councilmember Kay Lasman to approve the minutes of
the March 11, 2004 meeting. Motion carried.
FINANCIAL REPORT
Phil Cohen submitted a draft of the budget.

It was suggested we add $100 to Heritage Center beverage in case we do not meet our beverage minimum.

Phil Cohen said the trophies run $34.60 plus tax. He said we would formally adopt the budget at the next
meeting. The contract has a $3,000 guarantee. There are questions regarding what we will have for dinner.
The menu and ticket price will be set at the next meeting. Baylon Loosbrock reported a bank balance of
$479.07. There was a motion by Pastor Bruce Hobbs, seconded by Councilmember Kay Lasman to accept the
treasurer’s report. Motion carried.
CIVIC GROUP INVOLVEMENT
Councilmember Kay Lasman said District 279 Community Education should be added. Pastor Bruce Hobbs
will contact the police and fire chiefs to see if the Police Association and/or Fire Relief might be interested.
Letters to civic groups would be sent out the first part of December. We would include a list of those who
have received the award in the past.
THEME DEVELOPMENT
Phil Cohen said Margaret Sandberg would like the “Our Town” theme considered. She has had it on the
agenda for the past two years. Phil Cohen said this should be decided in the next meeting or two. There was a
motion by Pastor Bruce Hobbs, seconded by Dale Greenwald to adopt the “Our Town” theme. Motion
carried.
SPECIAL AWARD
Phil Cohen said the committee liked the Eagle trophy presented last year and that we may want to consider
using the same award again. Viking Trophies still carries this trophy. There was a motion by Dorothy
Jacobson, seconded by Pastor Bruce Hobbs to keep the Eagle Trophy. Motion carried.
PROGRAM/ENTERTAINMENT
Dale Greenwald’s band is available, but Dale may be out of town. Joe Brough’s band is available. There was a
discussion regarding what high school to contact. There was a motion by Councilmember Kay Lasman,
seconded by Dorothy Jacobson to make a contract with these two groups. Motion carried. Councilmember
Kay Lasman said Cooper is not available; Champlin Park performed last year and Park Center the previous two
years. It was decided Brooklyn Center High School should be invited. Councilmember Kay Lasman also
suggested a woman singer who performed at an Out of Sight meeting. The committee gave her the okay to
check out availability and price. Phil Cohen said the event was not video taped last year. He thinks it is
important from a historic perspective and will arrange for someone to do.

ADJOURNMENT
There was a motion by Pastor Bruce Hobbs, seconded by Councilmember Kay Lasman to adjourn the
meeting at 4:39 p.m. Motion carried.
