BROOKLYN CENTER SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2005, 4:00 PM
MEETING MINUTES
Phil Cohen called the Brooklyn Center Special Events Committee meeting to order at 4:01 p.m.
ATTENDANCE
Kay Lasman, Council Liaison; Baylon Loosbrock, Treasurer; Len Lasman, Scroll; Dorothy Jacobson, Women’s
Club; Phil Cohen, President; Pastor Bruce Hobbs, Vice-President; Tom Shinnick, Lions Club; Mary Focht,
Bremer Bank; Margaret Sandberg, Theme & Decorations; Sue LaCrosse, recreation staff liaison.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
There was a motion by Dorothy Jacobson, seconded by Baylon Loosbrock to approve the minutes of the
February 24, 2005 meeting. Motion carried.
FINANCIAL REPORT
Treasurer Baylon Loosbrock reported a balance of $462.91.
NOMINATING COMMITTEEE
There was a motion by Margaret Sandberg, seconded by Mary Focht to appoint a nominating committee of
Tony Kuefler, chair, Margaret Sandberg and Dorothy Jacobson to put together a slate of officers. Motion
carried.
CIVIC GROUP INVOLVEMENT
It was discussed to add the Brooklyn Center Business Association, the Lioness, school districts, VFW, Legion,
Crime Prevention and Fire Relief to the list. We are requesting a $200 sponsorship from each organization.
Other possibilities include the Hmong business group and a contact from the India restaurant.
THEME DEVELOPMENT
Margaret Sandberg suggested the following for possible themes:
Heart of Brooklyn Center
95 and Alive
Opportunity For Progress
Celebrating Our Changing Face
With all of the themes, she would continue to use the flags. Margaret Sandberg requested that everyone write
down their ideas and bring to the next meeting.
SPECIAL AWARD
It was decided to keep the Eagle Award.
PROGRAM/ENTERTAINMENT
Sue LaCrosse said that Dale Greenwald could not make the meeting today but his band is available on February
4 and he wants to be involved. It was decided we would have Dale’s group and invite the Joe Brough Band
again too.
Phil Cohen suggested the Brooklyn Center High School jazz band. He said he has had opportunity to hear
them a couple times and they are very good. Dorothy Jacobson said she likes having the youth perform.
Pastor Bruce Hobbs said we haven’t had a group from Brooklyn Center for quite a while. Kay Lasman will
contact the band director.

Baylon Loosbrock said the battery on his video camera went dead last year. He would be willing to video tape
again.
TICKET PRICE
Pastor Bruce Hobbs made a motion, seconded by Dorothy Jacobson to stay at the $30.00 ticket price assuming
the Earle Brown Heritage Center hasn’t increased rates. Motion carried. Councilmember Kay Lasman will get
a listing of the menu items.
TABLE FAVORS
In the February meeting, Dorothy Jacobson had proposed notepads and pens to be given out as table favors.
Phil Cohen said he orders all his pens from the National Pen Company. We can get 150 pens for .58¢ each.
By ordering 150, we would get 150 free. He said it could be plugged into the budget. There was a motion by
Dorothy Jacobson, seconded by Mary Focht to budget for the white pens. Motion carried.
OTHER
Margaret Sandberg reported that the wall decoration from last year was displayed at the library for two
months. When she went to pick it up, she was asked if they could laminate it and use it again.
There was a motion by Sue LaCrosse, seconded by Pastor Bruce Hobbs to nominate Laurie Rondesvedt as the
Special Events Committee award recipient. Motion carried.
Len Lasman reported the Lions Club will host their annual spaghetti dinner on Friday, October 14 from 4-7:00
p.m. at Brooklyn Center High School. Tickets are $6.00 each for adults. Spaghetti dinner tickets include
watching the football game for free. Tickets can be purchased from Len or any other Lion’s member.
NEXT MEETING
Sue LaCrosse will prepare a meeting time line.
Next meeting is Thursday, October 20, 2005 at 4:15 p.m. (NOTE: Time change to 4:15 p.m. This will be our
meeting start time from now on.)
ADJOURNMENT
There was a motion by Pastor Bruce Hobbs, seconded by Leonard Lasman to adjourn the meeting at
4:43 p.m. Motion carried.
