THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2008, 4:15 PM
MEETING MINUTES
Phil Cohen called the Brooklyn Center Special Events Committee meeting to order at 4:20 p.m.
ATTENDANCE
Phil Cohen, President; Councilmember Kay Lasman; Len Lasman, Scroll; Dorothy Jacobson,
Women’s Club; Sue Low, Business Association; Baylon Loosbrock, Treasurer; Tom Shinnick, Lions
Club; Tony Kuefler, Taxpayers Association; Doug Darnell; Dr. Duane Orn; Margaret Sandberg,
Theme Development; and Sue LaCrosse, recreation staff liaison.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
There was a motion by Doug Darnell, seconded by Dorothy Jacobson to approve the minutes of
January 31, 2008. Motion carried.
THEME DEVELOPMENT
The decorations were wonderful and inexpensive.
PROGRAM/ENTERTAINMENT
The high school band was spectacular. Some people commented that Midnight Breeze was too loud.
DINNER
The food was delicious and the service was fabulous. Councilmember Kay Lasman said there was a
new person in charge and she did an excellent job. Margaret Sandberg said Karen Orn was looking
for a committee table. For future, she would like to discuss whether we should have a committee
table. We should consider reserved seats for the emcee. Sue LaCrosse said we had 158 paid
reservations. There were some no shows, but everyone paid. Doug Darnell suggested having dessert
later.
COMMITTEE ITEMS
Len Lasman said he will put the scroll in a more prominent place next year. Not many people saw it
to sign.
It was the smoothest raffle and prize distribution. People were pleased and surprised at how fast it
went. They had 72 prizes. Tony Kuefler said he would like a person manning each table in 2009. He
will keep the roll of tickets. Some said the ticket numbers were too small.
Dr. Orn reported on the following comments that people shared with him.
1. Efficiency and effectiveness of the drawing for the door prizes was significantly improved
from prior events.
2. Tuan Huynh as a minority recipient was good step to include minorities.
3. Opening invocation by a woman was considered as a positive.
4. Some concern that caution needs to be exercised when politicians recommend other
politicians. The event should not be political statement.
5. Care also must be given to the selection of candidates where their paid job is the activity
that they are being awarded recognition.
6. The first set of the band may be too loud and it interfered with peoples’ desire to converse
1
after the formal meeting. It may be more appropriate for softer music renditions than the more
boisterous dance music. Dale and Louisa Greenwald drew listeners with their duet singing.
7. If dancing is to be a part of the evening than a dance floor should be part of the room
dance setup.
8. The event is patriotic. Maybe a theme to consider would be Purple Heart recipients who
live in the area.
TREASURER’S REPORT
Baylon Loosbrock reported income and expenses. After expenses we will have a balance carryover
for next year of $655.81. There was a motion by Dorothy Jacobson, seconded by Tony Kuefler to
approve the Treasurer’s Report. Motion carried.
OLD BUSINESS
Councilmember Kay Lasman reported that the mayor has asked someone to chair the 2011
Celebration. Vickie, assistant to the city manager, drafted a Centennial Celebration document which
was presented to the council at a work session. Councilmember Kay Lasman shared some of the
highlights.
NEW BUSINESS
Phil Cohen said he has suggested the Earle Brown Heritage Center hold an open house maybe with an
ice cream social. The Sunday after Earle Brown Days would be a suggested date. The city manager
is considering something in conjunction with the opening of the new hotel.
Phil Cohen suggested the Earle Brown Days committee invite veterans to the Saturday evening
festivities and have them stand up during a patriotic song.
Sue Low asked if she could get a lapel microphone.
Margaret Sandberg reported on the possible 2009 themes:
Celebrate The Present; Exciting Things Are Happening; Re-Creating Ourselves; Special Places--
Special Faces; Honor The Past; There’s More In Store; New Beginnings; Benign In ’09; Re-
develop…Re-invent…Re-new; Imagine The Future; Families First.
The Captain’s Room at the Heritage Center will be booked for Saturday, February 7, 2009.
NEXT MEETING
The next meeting is Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 4:15 p.m. in Room 221 of the Community
Center.

meeting.
