BROOKLYN CENTER SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE
THURSDAY, JANUARY 15, 2009, 4:30 PM
MEETING MINUTES
Phil Cohen called the Brooklyn Center Special Events Committee meeting to order
at 4:30 p.m.
ATTENDANCE
Baylon Loosbrock, Treasurer; Councilmember Kay Lasman; Len Lasman, Scroll; Tony Kuefler, Taxpayers
Association; Phil Cohen, President; Tom Shinnick, Lions Club; Dr. Duane Orn; Pastor Bruce Hobbs, Vice-
President; Sue Low, Business Community; Dorothy Jacobson, Women’s Club; Sue LaCrosse, recreation staff
liaison.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
There was a motion by Dorothy Jacobson, seconded by Pastor Bruce Hobbs to approve the minutes of
January 8, 2009. Motion carried.
TREASURER’S REPORT
Baylon Loosbrock reported donations of $1,600 plus $100 received today. There will also be a donation of
$300 from Rotary and $200 from the Charitable Foundation. He will continue to calculate the budget on 120
dinner reservations. There was a motion by Pastor Bruce Hobbs, seconded by Sue Low to approve the
treasurer’s report. Motion carried.
CIVIC GROUP INVOLVEMENT
The following civic groups have contributed money: Lions Club, Taxpayer’s Association, Women’s Club,
Dale Greenwald, Historical Society, and Bremer Bank.
Award recipients so far are: Mark Allen, BCBA; Logan Amon, Lions Club; Doug Darnell, Special Events;
Randy Koch, District 286, John Krause, Prayer Breakfast; Mike Meyer, Earle Brown Days; Betty Russell,
Lioness Club; Fran Schlosser, Women’s Club; Pat Snodgrass, Historical Society; Charles Stutz, Riverwood
Association; Jan Thielsen, Taxpayer’s Association; Todd Tishcer, Charitable Foundation; Jerry Anderson,
Rotary. Councilmember Kay Lasman said there may be a nomination from the Crime Prevention Program.
PROGRAM/ENTERTAINMENT
Councilmember Kay Lasman reported everything is all set. Three parents are coming to help. The band
director sent an invitation to each band students’ parents. He expects some may attend.
Dorothy Jacobson requested thank you notes to send to contributors. Sue LaCrosse will make a couple
samples.
COMMITTEE ACTION ITEMS
Phil Cohen said the helium for the balloons has been confirmed. Sue LaCrosse said publicity is done.
She has not heard back about getting a segment on Channel 12. She did send the information to the Sun
Post and Channel 12 Community Calendar.
Dr. Orn reported that Alfred Johnson will check out the equipment from Northwest Community
Television and will video tape for us. He needs help carrying in and out his equipment. Baylon
Loosbrock will assist him. He can make copies of the DVD for the candidates. Sue Low may have some
disks. Pastor Bruce Hobbs said he will help up front to make sure the recipient and their presenter stand
in the right spot.
OTHER
Councilmember Kay Lasman said the band director will set up around noon or 1:00 p.m. She said a table
of 9 for Fran Schlosser’s family has been approved by the Heritage Center. Sue LaCrosse said the
Centennial Committee is requesting information of what our plans are for 2011. For example, will we do
the same or make it bigger. The city manager requested our budget, our total expenses and revenue.
Baylon Loosbrock will bring that information to the next meeting. Sue LaCrosse said the city manager
also suggested someone from the Centennial Committee attend one of our meetings to find out what we
are about. We will probably receive a letter requesting this.
MEETING SCHEDULE
The next meeting is January 22, 29, & February 5 at 4:30 p.m.
ADJOURNMENT
There was a motion by Dorothy Jacobson, seconded by Councilmember Kay Lasman to adjourn the
meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 5:10 p.m.
