HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009 12-17 SECM BROOKLYN CENTER SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2009, 4:30 PM MEETING MINUTES Phil Cohen called the Brooklyn Center Special Events Committee meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. ATTENDANCE Tony Kuefler, Taxpayers Association; Baylon Loosbrock, Treasurer; Len Lasman, Scroll; Phil Cohen, President; Dorothy Jacobson, Women’s Club; Doug Darnell, Dr. Duane Orn; Dale Greenwald; Tom Shinnick, Lions Club; Sue Low; Councilmember Kay Lasman; Pastor Bruce Hobbs, Vice-President; Sue LaCrosse, recreation staff liaison. APPROVAL OF MINUTES There was a motion by Doug Darnell, seconded by Pastor Bruce Hobbs to approve the minutes of November, 19 2009. Motion carried. CIVIC AWARDS Sue LaCrosse reported the Civic Awards are coming in. ISD 286 Community Ed is nominating Park Nicollet Foundation - Chris Johnson, Earle Brown Days is nominating Medtronic Foundation, Rotary is nominating Bill Swanson and the Taxpayers are nominating Dave Kiser. Pastor Hobbs said the Prayer Breakfast nominatedNancy Rademacher and Doug Darnell said Special Events committee is nominating Jerry Woods from the football association. CIVIC GROUP INVOLVEMENT Phil Cohen reported the Charitable Foundation will donate $300. $70 for their recipient’s dinners and the rest as a donation. PROGRAM/ENTERTAINMENT Councilmember Kay Lasman reported there will be 20 people with the Cooper group. They want to use Dale’s keyboard. She will be meeting with Tara next week to go over the room arrangements. TREASURER’S REPORT Baylon Loosbrock reported a balance of $2,414.53 in checking and the CD. With the $400 held by the City, the balance ending is $2,814.53. There was a motion by Doug Darnell, seconded by Dorothy Jacobson to approve the Treasurer’s Report. Motion carried. He said we ran out of pens last year. There was a motion by Sue Low, seconded by Dorothy Jacobson to order 250 pens. Sue Low will make notepads again. The inscription on the pens will include the theme for 2010 and something about the Centennial in 2011. CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION Phil Cohen updated the committee on what was happening with the Centennial Committee. He said Keith Lester came up with a concept which went to the Council work session and he came up with a proposal which included the purpose and a proposed budget. He said he would like to contact the organizations during the first part of next year. Councilmember Kay Lasman reported there is a draft resolution supporting the work of the committee and the Special Events 2 Committee with Keith Lester appointed as chair of the Centennial subcommittee. This will go to the council in January. She said the Council expressed concerns that the Liberian, Hmong and Latin American residents be included as part of the celebration. The Council also wants to make sure that all four school districts are contacted, the Historical Society is contacted, the by-laws are current and that the committee reaches out to BC/BP Youth. NEXT MEETING January 7, 4:30 p.m. MEETING SCHEDULE January 14, 21, 28 & February 4. Motion carried. ADJOURNMENT There was a motion by Sue Low, seconded by Tony Kuefler to adjourn the meeting.
