BROOKLYN CENTER SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2010, 4:30 PM
MEETING MINUTES
Phil Cohen called the Brooklyn Center Special Events Committee meeting to order at
4:30 p.m.
ATTENDANCE
Phil Cohen, President; Margaret Sandberg, Theme Development; Doug Darnell, Tom Shinnick, Lions
Club; Councilmember Kay Lasman; Len Lasman, Scroll; Pastor Bruce Hobbs, Vice-President; Tony
Kuefler, Taxpayers; Dale Greenwald, and Sue LaCrosse, recreation staff liaison.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
There was a motion by Tom Shinnick, seconded by Pastor Bruce Hobbs to approve the minutes of
October 21, 2010. Motion carried.
TREASURER’S REPORT
No Report.
CIVIC AWARDS
Sue LaCrosse reported the letters went out to the organizations.
THEME DEVELOPMENT
Margaret Sandberg reported all four public elementary schools, Earle Brown, Evergreen, Garden City
and Northport are all making banners. She said the theme is Party of the Century. She is going to
hang the Hall of Fame posters in the lobby area. She may have Tony Kuefler’s redone.
Margaret Sandberg reported that the subcommittee of Councilmember Kay Lasman, Sue Low,
Dorothy Jacobson, and Margaret Sandberg met to discuss the give-a-way or favors. Margaret
Sandberg is opposed to the idea of giving away a glass or mug because it costs too much money. The
cost of the mugs are 2.75 each. They will send a sample. The company is www.glasswithatwist.com.
Councilmember Kay Lasman, Sue Low and Dorothy Jacobson were in favor of the glass mug.
Margaret Sandberg said the notepad is .81 cents and everyone can use them. The calendar idea is out
because it is way too much. Phil Cohen asked committee members what they would like. Everyone
except Margaret Sandberg and Sue LaCrosse want to order the glass mugs. Dale Greenwald said he
would donate $400 toward the cost. Phil Cohen requested we look at the budget and table to the
next meeting.
PROGRAM/ENTERTAINMENT

Phil Cohen reported the video taping will be done by Brooklyn Center High School for $200. The 4
degree Knights have not coordinated with boy scouts yet.

CENTENNIAL
There was a request to ask the Centennial committee for pens to give to everyone. Sue LaCrosse will
ask them.
OTHER
There was a motion by Dr. Duane Orn, seconded by Tony Kuefler that the Special Events Committee
will not assume the cost of anyone receiving free dinners. Motion carried. There was a motion by
Pastor Bruce Hobbs, seconded by Councilmember Kay Lasman that we do not have any additional
speakers. Motion carried.
Sue LaCrosse asked if the Special Events Committee was going to nominate someone to receive the
civic award. There was a motion by Dr. Duane Orn, seconded by Councilmember Kay Lasman to
have the Special Events Executive Committee come up with possible recommendations for the award
with no one as an option and bring to the committee for their approval or disapproval. Motion
carried.
NEXT MEETING
The next meeting will be held Thursday, December 16 at 4:30 p.m.
ADJOURNMENT
There was a motion by Councilmember Kay Lasman, seconded by Tony Kuefler to adjourn the
meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 5:18 p.m.
