BROOKLYN CENTER SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2010, 4:30 PM
MEETING MINUTES
Phil Cohen called the Brooklyn Center Special Events Committee meeting to order at
4:33 p.m.
ATTENDANCE
Phil Cohen, President; Baylon Loosbrock, Treasurer; Len Lasman, Scroll; Tom Shinnick, Lions Club;
Councilmember Kay Lasman; Pastor Bruce Hobbs, Vice-President; Dorothy Jacobson, Women’s
Club; and Sue LaCrosse, recreation staff liaison.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
There was a motion by Pastor Bruce Hobbs, seconded by Councilmember Kay Lasman to approve
the minutes of September 16, 2010. Motion carried.
TREASURER’S REPORT
Baylon Loosbrock reported a bank balance of $1,468.23. He wrote a check to Allegra for $239.40
for postcard printing. We received a contribution of $200 from women’s club and $100 from Jean
Schiebel. There was a motion by Pastor Bruce Hobbs, seconded by Tom Shinnick to approve the
treasurer’s report. Motion carried.
CIVIC AWARDS
Pastor Bruce Hobbs requested that Monique Drier be added to the awards list for the MAC group.
Phil Cohen said there is a limit to how many civic awards we will give out. Every time someone is
nominated, it takes time to write it up and to read it. We only have so much time for that segment.
The cost of trophies is about $38 each. We have to subsidize the cost of the trophy for those without
civic group sponsors. We also want to make sure they come in with $70 for at least two dinners.
Phil Cohen reported Earle Brown Days is nominating Chris Johnson from Luther Chev. EBD created
a form for him to sign stating he will attend the birthday party. Phil Cohen asked if we want to attach
something like this to the nomination materials we send to the civic groups. There was a motion by
Dorothy Jacobson, seconded by Len Lasman to set a limit of 20 nominees and include an acceptance
notice in the materials. Motion carried. It was suggested there be a subcommittee to look at ways to
expedite the awards process.
PROGRAM/ENTERTAINMENT
Phil Cohen said there has been an inquiry from the Knights of Columbus wondering if we want them
to do anything more than present the colors. The committee said no. He said the video taping is still
open and the Boy Scouts are aboard. Councilmember Kay Lasman will suggest the BCHS Jazz
Ensemble play songs thru the 100 years. She will contact them for time and their needs.
Sue LaCrosse asked the committee to review the nomination materials. There was a motion by
Dorothy Jacobson, seconded by Tom Shinnick to approve the materials going to the civic group
1
organizations. Motion carried.
Pastor Bruce Hobbs sent out a letter to the MAC group. He said they receive a stipend of $25 to
attend each meeting. He requested they give up their stipend and use it towards the Brooklyn Center
Birthday Party dinner. He would pay the difference if they couldn’t pay the additional $10.
Phil Cohen passed out a Hennepin Tech souvenir coin. He said at the last meeting we talked about
what we wanted to do for give-a-ways, such as mugs, glass mugs, pens, and notepads. Phil Cohen
has catalogs and information on costs of different items. There was a motion by Len Lasman,
seconded by Tom Shinnick to appoint a subcommittee of Dorothy Jacobson, Margaret Sandberg, Sue
Low, and Councilmember Kay Lasman to review the items available and make a recommendation to
the committee of what we should order. Motion carried.
Dorothy Jacobson asked if we were going to allow groups to set up a table where they could display
information. Phil Cohen said part of Keith Lester’s discussion with the Historical Society included
them setting up a table. There was a motion by Margaret Sandberg, seconded Councilmember Kay
Lasman to deny the requests to allow display tables. Motion carried.
Margaret Sandberg said she would like to get every school involved.
NEXT MEETING
The next meeting will be held Thursday, November 18 at 4:30 p.m.
ADJOURNMENT
There was a motion by Pastor Bruce Hobbs, seconded by Dorothy Jacobson to adjourn the
meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 5:30 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Sue LaCrosse
